The man who commanded the 403 police officers and firefighters killed in the Sept. 11 terror attacks told a fire station filled with first responders Wednesday: "In defending your community, you're defending America."
Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani brought his unofficial Republican presidential campaign to the North Spartanburg Fire Department, telling uniformed personnel and civilians, "Your ability to do (your jobs) well will determine whether we save lives and save America" if terrorists strike again.

In an interview with The Greenville News, Giuliani said that as president he would finish the Mexican border wall in California already authorized by Congress, but he would create a "technological wall" to seal the border and develop secure identification cards for immigrants.
In calling for energy independence, Giuliani said everything must be on the table, including exploratory drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and in potential seabed fields off the East Coast.
"We have to look at all these things a second time, with more of an emphasis of solving this problem of energy independence," including greater use of nuclear, wind and solar power, cleaning up coal and stepped-up ethanol use, he said.
