Spurred by civil unions, N.J. churches to focus on marriage
Catholic church says: "Marriage is wonderful and good."

Gay and lesbian couples say: "Marriage is wonderful and good."

 Uh, I forget. What's the conflict again?

Spurred by civil unions, N.J. churches to focus on marriage

By Geoff Mulvihill, Associated Press | February 25, 2007

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. -- At the behest of the state's seven Roman Catholic bishops, a prayer to be recited in parishes across the state today will focus on the importance of marriage.

The Prayer of the Faithful says, in part, "God our almighty Father has given married love, its faithfulness and its fruitfulness, a special significance in the history of salvation."

The timing of the prayer, about a week after New Jersey became the third state in the nation to offer civil unions to same-sex couples, is deliberate.

While not specifically addressing the issue, the prayer is intended to remind Catholics that the church opposes same-sex marriage, according to Patrick R. Brannigan, executive director of the New Jersey Catholic Conference.

(snip)

"We would be foolish to sit silently knowing that people are very effectively articulating a position that is in opposition to our church teaching," Brannigan said.

1. I take my elderly parents to mass each Sunday
Edited on Sun Feb-25-07 11:43 AM by LibDemAlways
in California. A couple of weeks ago married couples were asked to stand and renew their vows. This is done every year around Vaentine's Day ....and I happen to think it's a lousy idea since there are no doubt plenty of divorced and widowed and never-married people present who are having their noses rubbed in it. Also, I'm sure there are married couples who have no desire to "renew their vows" for whatever reason....I hate coercive pavlovian shit like this.....anyway, I digress. I just hope that one of these years a gay couple will stand up along with everybody else. I'd love to see the expression on the priest's face.

3. or if marriage is so important why aren't the NeoCons trying
to save all of the military families marriages that they have destroyed with their fucking war. These families are being devestated and nary a word from the Catholic Church or Dobson or the * cabal....

SPOILER ALERT:
I went to see the movie "Because I said so" with Diane Keaton , I thought the movie was cute....but it was really sad in a way because it was based on a mother pushing her daughter to marry because in her mind that was the only way to achieve happiness in life...

I am not against marriage by any means if it is because a couple is in love but to do it because society demands it...I have a problem with it...

5. "A special significance in the history of salvation"
Would someone please have the Catholic Bishop of New Jersey read the Bible? Paul is quite clear that marriage is inferior to salvation, and exists only as a way out of Hell for those too sinful to live a celebate life.
