White House Disaster Drill Supposes 10-City IED Strike
Dozens of high-level officials joined in a White House drill yesterday to see how the government would respond if several cities were attacked simultaneously with bombs similar to those used against U.S. troops in Iraq.

White House homeland security adviser Frances Fragos Townsend and the Homeland Security Council that she heads mapped out in advance a massive disaster involving improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. The attack targeted 10 U.S. cities, both large and small, at the same time, said a senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Townsend presided over the three-hour exercise, which brought the government's top homeland security officials to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House. All Cabinet agencies were represented by their secretaries or other high-ranking officials, with about 90 participants in all, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

President Bush went on a bike ride yesterday morning and did not take part in the test.

1. So they are doing simulations of a major national disaster
and the Pretzeldent went on a bike ride.

Oh, well. He was useless during 9/11, too.

2. The only realistic part of this drill
"President Bush went on a bike ride yesterday morning and did not take part in the test."

My guess is that the dumb shit was sent on that bike ride so he didn't somehow fuck up the exercise.

29. Actually, he's pretty dangerous on a bike.
Some, of course, would say reckless. But that would be irresponsible, though accurate.

. Jeezus. I'm a stay-at-home dad and _I_ don't have time for a bike ride. How the hell does the president have time to take a ride? Nothing more important going on??

6. what a joke
Edited on Sun Feb-25-07 02:37 PM by madrchsod
first of all every city that would be hit would have to deal with the problem immediately and they know enough not to wait for the feds. second most cities already have emergency plans for all kinds of disasters whether man made or natural. the power of a tornado,a hazardous material exploding, flood,or other major catastrophes are more powerful than most bombs. we have had a lot of bombings in the usa i think there`s plenty of studies...i wonder if the homeland security did`t want to become irrelevant?

7. Rove told them the Phear wasn't working anymore, so cheney's plane was diverted and they did this
stupid idiotic 10-city IED test. Explosive materials are so locked-down in this country that terrorists would be hard-pressed to do here what insurgents (and whoever else) are doing in Iraq.

My husband doesn't understand that, and insists on checking the oil and tires before we leave on a trip!

9. I think this will actually happen
as a pretext to martial law. I am sorry, I just don't think PNAC will allow a free and fair vote if they think a anti-PNAC candidate would win..

13. IED = Home Made Bomb
The media sure love IED, and use it whenever they can.

An IED usually takes a munition, and rigs an improvised detonator around it. That's what is being used against our soldiers in Iraq, to take out mainly vehicles.

Home made bombs, like the one used against Oklahoma City, and much much bigger fertilizer and fuel oil concoctions, where a munition is needed to cause the detonation.

22. Roadside bomb and Oklahoma City/McVeigh were my first 2 thoughts too
Call them what they are, don't "sexisize" them by giving them an acronym. Roadside bombs. Home made bombs. That is what they are. And it made me think of McVeigh or whomever those other white guys have been that have been stopped in recent yrs. It's only a matter of time before someplace gets bombed again.

18. Now that you mentioned it, isn't that what happened on 9-11
They were having some kind of drill dealing with the exact event on that day. Some were not sure if it was a real event or part of the drill.

Whew, we missed that bullet.

19. There were many "drills" on 9/11
Including one at the National Reconnaissance Office where they evacuated the building after a simulated attack of a plane hitting the building.

Imagine that.

16. As devasting as an IED attack would be to those involved,
effectively it would amount to a couple of car wrecks. A car bomb would be worse, of course.

21. Well, if somebody set off a friggin' IED in Los Angeles, I sincerely hope
that THE POLICE would do their job to apprehend the responsible parties and the COURTS would try them, after THE POLICE conducted a lawful investigation.

I guess I'm weird. I thought this was still a nation of laws. I didn't realize we needed Bush's buddies' PNAC to go after common criminals.

Seems as though other 'democracies' are a bit more resilient than ours...

But we've turned into cowards, I guess.
