More Americans Trust Congress Over Bush on Iraq, Poll Finds

By Jon Cohen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, February 26, 2007; 9:58 AM

Congressional Democrats still hold a sizeable advantage over President Bush in who the public trusts to handle the Iraq war, although the gap has narrowed somewhat since Bush's State of the Union speech, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

With Bush's approval ratings mired by the unpopular war, Americans trust congressional Democrats over Bush to handle the situation in Iraq by a 54 percent to 34 percent margin. That is down from a 27-point gap before the president's address last month. The Democrats' lead has been tapered not by Bush gains, but because of a five-point increase in the number who trust neither the Democrats in Congress nor the president on the issue and an 8-point decline in their advantage among independents.

1. Maybe if Congress ends this war...
they'd regain and surpass a 27 point lead.

2. No kidding
What are they waiting for? Remember how forthright and straight ahead the Bushistas acted with a bare plurality of the electorate behind them? They simply declared a mandate and whoosh! they were off like a prom dress.

Congress, by contrast, has a big majority, and solid dominance in public opinion, but they're practically wetting themselves at the prospect of opposing the Bush administration because Dean of All Pundits David Broder or some other imaginary being might frown on their endeavors.

Message to Congress: If you don't move in accordance with the people's clearly expressed wishes, the people themselves might move. And you can bet that the proces will get a whole lot messier if it does.
