Breaking MSNBC: Blast outside Afghan base; Cheney unhurt
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 01:29 AM by RamboLiberal
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17355517/

An explosion outside the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan went off Tuesday as Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting, causing an unknown number of casualties but apparently not putting the vice president in danger, officials said.

The blast happened at the first gate outside the base at Bagram, and there were an unknown number of casualties, said Kabir Ahmad, the district chief of the Bagram region.

Maj. William Mitchell said it did not appear the explosion was intended as a threat to the vice president, who was “safely inside the base” during the blast.

First Deadeye Dick's plane has mechanical trouble now the Taliban almost blow the old bastard sky high. He must be getting a little nervous.

This is starting to sound like a Mafia movie except instead of "The Godfather" we have "The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight". Maybe Shrub's purging of the CIA got rid of all the guys who were pros at political assassinations?

Would the Vice President getting wasted be a good enough causus belli for war with Iran?

24. Interesting....
Cheney makes a double-secret trip to Pakistan, delivers a message which pisses off the Pakistanis, then just hours later there's a Taliban bomber ready to blow himself up at Cheney's next double-secret destination.

Now, how'd the Taliban happen to know about that secret arrival?

Looks like someone just sent Dick a message. If it were me I'd skip today's meeting with Mr. Hand and head back for my comfy bunker in the Blue Ridge.

Then again, flying doesn't seem too safe for the VP these days, either.

91. Maybe now is a good time to make a long-shot prediction.
Pervez Musharraf will be dead within 72 hours of Dick Cheney's arrival back in the United States. The military dictator who succeeds him will be either a former member of or closely associated with the ISI. For the trifecta, I'll go ahead and say it will be one of the ISI dudes who passed on the fallacious Atta-met-with-Iraqis-in-Prague story.

I may sound like a jerk to some for saying this, until one considers that I am almost never correct. So I may be doing Gen. Musharraf a favor.

SEOUL, Feb 27 (Reuters) - A South Korean soldier was among those killed in a bomb attack
outside a U.S. military base in Afghanistan where U.S. vice President Dick Cheney was

NATO put the toll from the attack at four, including the bomber. Local police say 10 people
died. An American soldier was among those killed.

Cheney OK after Afghan Blast; 14 killed

By ALISA TANG, Associated Press Writer 15 minutes ago

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - A suicide bomber attacked the entrance to the main U.S. military base in
Afghanistan Tuesday during a visit by Vice President
Dick Cheney, killing at least 14 people and wounding a dozen more. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said Cheney was the target.

Cheney's spokeswoman said he was fine, and the vice president later met with President Hamid Karzai in the capital, Kabul, before leaving the country.

There were conflicting reports on the death toll. Provincial Gov. Abdul Jabar Taqwa said 20 people were killed, while
NATO said initial reports indicated three fatalities, including a U.S. soldier, a South Korean coalition soldier and a U.S. government contractor whose nationality wasn't immediately known. NATO said 27 people also were wounded.

It was unclear why there was such a large discrepancy in the reports.

Cheney says heard "loud boom" when Bagram base attacked

MUSCAT, Oman, Feb 27 (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Dick Cheny heard the bomb
attack at the gate of Bagram Airbase where he had spent the night and was briefly
moved to a bomb shelter, he said on Tuesday.

"They clearly try to find ways to question the authority of the central government,"
Cheney told reporters travelling with him out of Afghanistan on a military plane
to Oman.

"Striking at Bagram with a suicide bomber I suppose is one way to do that."

He was moved briefly to a bomb shelter at the Bagram base, he said, but returned to his room "as the situation settled down."

MUSCAT (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney was whisked into a bomb shelter immediately after a Taliban suicide bomber struck the main American military base he was visiting in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Up to 14 people were killed, including one U.S. and one South Korean soldier, in the Bagram Airbase attack which rebels said was aimed at Cheney.

He had been in his room at the base where he had unexpectedly had to stay the night after bad weather forced postponement of his trip to the capital, Kabul, about 60 km (40 miles) away.

"At 10 a.m. I heard a loud boom," Cheney said.

Base authorities sounded a red alert and secret service officials told Cheney there had been a suspected suicide attack.

60. Good thing for Cheney he wasn't reading "My Pet Goat" to the soldiers.

They'd have let him sit around for 20 minutes longer! :sarcasm:

54. Things are going swimmigly in Afghanistan - Mann Coulter
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/08/25/coulter-ends-segment/

..Coulter responded, “As for catching Osama, it’s irrelevant. Things are going swimmingly in Afghanistan.” Powers blasted Coulter for her answer. Coulter then abruptly decided to end her participation in the middle of the segment, saying, “OK, well, good night! It was nice being here.” ..

72. No no,that wasn't an assassination attempt, he was being greeted as a "liberator,"
Yep, it's like the shrapnel is metal confetti.

I hope Cheney isn't hoping for any post-assassination-attempt lovin' in the polls a la Reagan, who was petering along in approvals), 'cuz I got none to give.

Actually how in teh world they are equating this to a threat on Cheney's life is mind boggling; he was in a fortified compound and no explosives were lobbied inside the structure.

77. Now this is weird about motorcade Cheney was in
From KO's Countdown email msnbc.

Cheney was supposed to have had a three-hour visit with Afghan President Hamid Karzai; the visit was cut to just an hour. Arriving in Kabul for the visit, the veep and the press were ushered into a heavily fortified motorcade. All passengers were instructed to buckle the seat belts, and were warned of a bumpy ride. The road was closed, but there was no apparent effort made to control people on the street, who wandered the throughway as the motorcade rolled by.

Trying to make Cheney in to a martyr?

85. Cheney takes refuge in bomb shelter after Afghan blast

Up to 14 people were killed, including one U.S. and one South Korean soldier, in the Bagram air base attack which rebels said was aimed at Cheney.

"They moved me for a relatively brief period of time to one of the bomb shelters nearby," he said. "As the situation settled down and they got a better sense in terms of what was going on, then I went back to my room until it was time to leave."

NATO's death toll in the attack was four, officials said. A Reuters photographer at the scene saw an additional 10 bodies, putting the total at 14.

A U.S. government contractor, whose nationality was unknown, was among those killed and 27 people were wounded, NATO said.

"We wanted to target ... Cheney," Taliban spokesman Mullah Hayat Khan told Reuters by phone from an undisclosed location.

In Washington, the White House said it was unclear how the suicide bomber had been able to get close to the base.

"At this point, people are still investigating what happened, so we don't have a firm answer for you," White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters.

Snow called it an "isolated attack" and declined to say whether it was a sign of Taliban strength.

"We've often said about acts of terror: An individual who wants to commit an act of violence or kill him or herself -- very difficult to stop," Snow said.

U.S.
President George W. Bush's initial reaction to the attack was concern about whether Cheney was all right, he said.

Soon after the blast, Cheney -- who officials say was never in danger from the blast at the sprawling base -- went ahead with talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the capital.

Asked if he had ever considered changing his plans to go to Kabul, Cheney said that was "never an option."
