U.S. nuclear-powered carrier Ronald Reagan leaves Sasebo
http://asia.news.yahoo.com/070228/kyodo/d8nij1r80.html
(Kyodo) _ The U.S Navy's latest model of nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan, left Sasebo port in Nagasaki Prefecture on Wednesday after its first port call in Japan which started Saturday.

The 102,000-ton carrier, with a crew of about 5,000, stayed at the port for five days mainly to rest the crew and replenish supplies.

...

The carrier is scheduled to participate in a joint exercise of the U.S. Navy and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force off Japan's southern island of Kyushu. It is expected to operate in the western Pacific in place of the diesel-powered carrier USS Kitty Hawk, based in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, while it undergoes maintenance.

1. It's like naming a ship the Adolf Hitler.
The day this thing was christened the Ronald Reagun america lost it's value in my eyes. Reagun represented above all, the right of the rich to steal and walk away from their crimes. His presidency was a festival of looting by the corparatists and S&L shills while working people lost ground.

This nation is a fucking nightmare.

2. They should have named it the Heinrich Himmler
His views of exploitation and treatment of enemies (Abu Ghraib) and torture (Guantanamo)have become standard procedure in the present administration.

5. How dare they name a warship after a President arraigned on multiple

serious, criminal charges, who only escaped possible conviction by claiming amnesia. These people are without shame.

And then to arraign a serving President of outstanding calibre on non-legal charges concerning his private "affairs", betrays a presumption that simply beggars belief! "Surreal" is, it seems, a word whch can scarcely be used too frequently in connection with these neo-Republicans. To call them "neo cons" in the sense of "new conservatives" insults even economic conservatives; which, in itself, speaks volumes.

It's the same with Blair. Billions of pounds are misdirected and squandered by the bucket-load, each year, while the real priorities for funding the well-being of our society are most grossly and shamelessly neglected.

3. Man, that story's all fucked up
The Reagan isn't the newest "model" of carrier, although it's the newest one in the fleet. The newest carrier under construction is the George Herbert Walker Bush (sigh), and they're both just the newest Nimitz-class carriers. And the Kitty Hawk isn't diesel-powered; it has a conventional steam plant.

I agree on the travesty of naming carriers after living ex-presidents, just in order to fulfill a Grover Norquist agenda (The Reagan was commissioned before he died).

4. Agreed
I would really like to take all the Presidential names off of ships and go back to what were in my opinion the cooler (and much more inspiring) ones like America, Intrepid, Constellation and the historical battles like Yorktown, Saratoga, Lexington, etc as opposed to the Reagan (or the USS Spend the Country into the Ground and Break the Unions) or the GHW Bush (or the USS Pandering to the Boss by naming an aircraft carrier after his Dad) soon to be followed by the Gerald Ford (or the USS We'll name it after another Republican because we controlled Congress when the authorization bill came up)

7. It's rewarding, indeed, lionising the very criminal war-mongers of your
society who always lead it to war and economic ruin.

can't have the "Ronald Reagan" damaged ... of course, they scrapped the ship named after JFK ... probably sunk it to make a reef ...

10. JFK
She is still in commission. The Big John sailed out of Norfolk on Tuesday bound for a port visit in Boston. She then will return to Mayport FL. for decommissioning preparations. She will be placed in ordinary at Philadelphia. Think it was the ex USS America that was recently sunk. Not sure if it was for a reef. There was another old Essex Class carrier sunk for a reef about 18 months ago.

12. We should buy one of the de-commissioned carriers and create a Micro-Nation on it.
What we could do is declare war against The Principality of Sea Land, and they could ask The United Nations to mediate the dispute.

That way, we'd both need to be granted official recognition as sovereign nations.

I'm sure that The Gay And Lesbian Kingdom of The Coral Sea Islands would join us against The Sea Land Menace.

Welcome to the Island of DemocraticUndergroundia!

14. Just another tool to destroy the world in which we live...
Park this thing off the cost of the country you don't like, shoot rockets at them while the crew plays shuffleboard.
