US braces for tornado battering
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6409659.stm

The US Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a rare "major severe weather outbreak" warning for the eastern third of the US for the next 24 hours.

Tornadoes have already been reported in Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas.

The SPC warned of bigger, stronger storms ahead, causing "potentially a very dangerous situation".

We have these kinds of storms every spring. We all just know to duck for cover.

10. Same here in Kansas
A tornado siren just means someone needs to grab the camcorder and head to the porch!

15. But if the tornado is coming at night
it's hard to know where to duck for cover, especially if you don't have a basement or cellar.

26. I don't have a basement or cellar. If it looks really bad I just
head for the underground parking at Sears - 1 mile away. But that doesn't happen very often.

19. What's even more rare is thundersnow.
I've only seen it once in my life. If it had been just a bit colder in the clouds today, I would have seen it twice.

21. I have seen thunder snow twice
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 01:20 AM by undergroundpanther
Once during the day, was the first time, I think it was the blizzard of 1983? I was shocked to see a diffused flash and hear thunderclap in a weird muffled way as I was pushing our stuck car out of a snow rut.In snow everything is so quiet so even the thunder was muted.

The second time I saw Thunder snow was in the evening, just after sunset. It was snowing with ice on the trees already. The lightning looked very weird with the snow falling outside and the ice reflected it.I had to look closer so I went outside on the porch and looked up and waited. Soon I saw saw a bolt of lightning going cloud to cloud with snow falling and it was bizarre and unforgettably surreal.Wish I had a camera.

27. I remember that when I heard...
the thunder during the snow storm-it sounded like a muffled echo-like it sounds when it thunders in a large city and you hear it from a high floor.

23. Yeah
We got twelve inches of snow just outside of Seattle. Just for perspective, we only get snow a handful of times in the winter and never more than 2-3 inches. Now, because there isn't snow up in this area, there are next to no snow plows so the whole place shuts down whenever we have that dusting of snow. This one shut us down completely. Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention, we never get snow past the middle of February.

5. Tornado battering?
How do they get the storms to hold still while they cover them with batter? Once battered, at what temperature do they cook them, and for how long?

7. I had a dream about a tornado hitting Manhattan Tues night
It was very real, very disturbing. The dream may have had more to do with the bombing a Bagram Airforce base. I just heard a tornado hit a school in Alabama, my heart goes out to them.

14. Weather forecasters are stating this is the largest outbreak of storms in a decade..
We are on the very nothern edge of the storm area (mid-michigan) and not expecting the severe stuff.

If you are in harms way, pay attention to the movement of these storms.

BTW. weather.com has just added new local storm tracking maps that you can zoom right down to your own neighborhood including street names.

16. It was bad...I'm in GA at the moment.

At the conclusion of our technical rehearsal onstage (we're in Milledgeville, E of Macon) a woman rushed into the theater to tell us that the college was being shut down and evac'd due to tornadoes in the area. We spent an anxious couple of hours in big thunder and rain, flickering lights, but the worst skirted our area...other areas in GA and Alabama not so lucky :(
The show went on (of course!) and the 100+ souls that braved the elements were treated to some spectacular modern dance.

Hope your friends and relations in the region here are OK....

:hi:

Actually Richmond Hill. I just checked the radar and it looks very bad. It's 1 a.m. out there and I'm sure most are in bed with this huge front bearing down on them. I guess I won't get much sleep tonight. Here in NE WI lots of sleet, some snow and freezing rain. Many without power, but we were fortunate all the way around. Everyone in the path of the severe stuff--stay safe!

18. Rain in maryland
Saw a few flashes of lightning. It's raining here but not so bad right now..
We have flood warnings tho.Luckily I remembered it and cleaned out my cellar drain and the sump pump is fine, ready to roll. Hopefully I won't have to wake up my roommate who has to get to work at the crack of dawn to help me bail out the basement well to keep water out of the house again. The worst is supposed to happen late, this time I am glad I am an insomniac.

Having to bail out a basement and deal with everything being soaked is enough to ruin your whole year!

For everyone: for about $120 you can buy an auxiliary sump pump kit. It has a sump pump and a battery charger. Drop the pump into your sump, add a deep discharge auto battery and plug in the charger. The deal is that should the main pump fail because the power goes out or even if the float switch hangs up, the water rises and trips the spare pump. It's a life saver if a storm comes through, dumps a ton of rain and takes out the local grid. It's a lot cheaper than a generator. It won't light your house or keep the furnace running, but at least your basement will stay dry.

25. We got pounded with snow up here in Minnesota.
In some areas the snow drifts are so huge you can fall in one and not come out until spring! I was just looking at the weather map the the pattern of isobars around the low is like a frigging bullseye centered on Milwaukee, the storm's cyclonic circulation is very well developed.

30. AP: Bush Will Tour Tornado-Struck Areas
Bush Will Tour Tornado-Struck Areas

Friday March 2, 2007 4:31 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush on Saturday will visit areas hit by a violent
storm system that spawned tornadoes in several states and struck an Alabama high
school, killing eight students.

The White House said Bush would make two stops on Saturday, but his destinations
were still being worked out with governors in the affected states.

The burst of tornadoes was part of a line of thunderstorms and snowstorms that
stretched from Minnesota to the Gulf Coast. Authorities blamed tornadoes for the
deaths of a 7-year-old girl in Missouri, 10 people in Alabama and nine in Georgia,
and twisters also damaged homes in Kansas.

31. We're getting odd stuff up here in Michigan.
Very bad winds (no tornadoes, though, thank goodness), blizzard conditions, warm pavement now freezing into black ice. We had rain on Wednesday--total downpour.

If anyone still thinks global warming is bs, he's an idiot.
