Saddam Rants
A defiant, deranged Saddam Hussein is making outrageous statements to CIA interrogators, claiming his government never surrendered - and that he would win by a landslide in new Iraqi elections, The Post has learned.

They have also played him videotapes of Iraqis celebrating in the streets at the news of his capture and tapes of the uncovering of mass graves and former torture chambers.

"His reply to this is to tell us to go ahead and organize elections and that he'd win big if we did," said a U.S. official.

"He is trying to assume an aura of authority and the people questioning him constantly have to remind themselves who he is," said Ret. Col. Patrick Lang, former Middle East chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency, who has spoken to several former colleagues familiar with the interrogation sessions.

2. The part I find interesting is about Iran using the chemical weapons
on the Kurds, Saddam isn't the only one who makes that claim. Also, it was a western film crew who recorded the aftermath by being slipped across the border into N Iraq by Iranians. Therefore the Iranians had foreknowledge of the event. Our government supplied both sides with weapons and intelligence during the Iran/Iraq war. Either the Iranians did indeed launch the chemical attack or they got intelligence on the when and where it would happen. The thing about chems is the conditions have to be just right.

7. TheArmy college investigated.
They came back with a report that said Iraq used mustard gas and Iran used nerve gas (fatal) during battles across this front line village. Will Saddam present evidence from the Army college? Will rUmmy testify to mustard gas or a nerve gas.

8. Well, he WAS the government, and he never surrendered, ...
so it's true that his government never surrendered. How he would do at the polls is unclear, but probably not as well as he thinks. Still, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Iraqis would vote for him over the U.S. So, what 'outrageous' statements is he making?

9. Someone needs to....
...remind Saddam of the 2000 election. It doesn't matter how many Iraqis vote for him...it'll be Jim Baker who decides who wins!

11. What WOULD the US do if the Baath party won at the polls?
I can just see B*sh's little simian brain burning all three of its neurons in overdrive trying to comprehend?

Granted, it's true that the Baath party winning in Iraq is about as likely as my cat learning that I don't appriciate it when she headbutts things off of counters and shelves, but still?

12. DERANGED?
Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 03:35 PM by maxsolomon
a RW bonehead on another chatboard called hussein a "coward" yesterday. much like this, i think its wish fufillment. saddam is many things, but a coward & dranged is not amongst them.

i don't expect a wily, sociopathic egoiste to be anything but defiant. he's used to issuing orders, bullying, bluffing, & lying so well even he believes it (i.e. OJ). why would he change? why would he even respond to the questioning of army functionaries? he's a self-made, ruthless head of state, and they better send in someone he respects if they want him to stop toying with them. a general, minimum.

maybe his old buddy rummy!

13. For the record...
It was indeed Saddam who ordered the gas attack of Halabja and the rest of the Kurdish villiages....

Read up on Operation Anfal.

Why would Iran bomb it's own position with checmicals? By accident? after the global news media had already reported the Iranians being in control of Halabja and the surrounding district (2 days prior)?

The fact is, the Kurds had always been a problem for Saddam, they welcomed the Iranians when they came, and paid a terrible price for it.

I don't buy the "logistical mixup, Iranians accidentally gassed an area they controlled" theory that was floated, never did.... It also has been disproven that cyanide gas was used, seeing that the combination of the sarin, VX, tabun, and mustard gas used in combination caused the blueing around the mouths of the victims.

This was genocide. "ethnic cleansing"

Human rights watch has a good article I found recently with the lowdown on the "Anfal" campaign, of which the gassing of Halabja was only one part.
