Iran 'owed billions for Saddam war'

The head of Iraq's Interim Governing Council says Iran should be paid reparations for the war that Saddam Hussein waged against it in the 1980s.

Abdul Aziz al-Hakim said further discussion was needed to decide what if anything Iraq would pay itself.

Iran claims $100bn in reparations for the brutal eight-year war that claimed about one million lives. <snip>

Iran points out that Kuwait has already received billions of dollars through the UN's Iraqi oil-for-food programme in compensation for the invasion of that country. <snip>

5. Our boy, The Shah, did a bit of damage..
didn't he? We should be paying reps for that fine period of American history when we installed and supported a genuine prick whose policies terrorized the Iranians.

11. You're reading my mind
How about this: all the people who ever suffered from a weapon manufactured in the U.S. sue the U.S. government and the manufacturer in some kind of giant class-action product liability suit.

Result: world peace maybe?

13. Would the US be
justified in collecting from all the people saved or defended by a weapon or technology developed by the US? Let's not be too overly broad about the government's influence.

This is not a nation of mad scientists.

2. Oh! You mean the war WE
helped Saddam perpetrate. Oh dear. This might lead to the American people learning about our old friendship with ol' Hidey-hole-Hussein. ;-)

3. The Trial of Saddam
should be a very, very ugly trial for America.

6. Just wait for the breaking news alert...
"Saddam commits suicide in jail by shooting himself in back of head from 25 feet away..."

If the Iraqs want to have a public trial, then the BFEE will have no choice but to whack him...

7. Why are we paying Saddam's debts?
Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 09:59 AM by DoYouEverWonder
Shouldn't this money be coming from all that money Iraq was going to make selling their oil? You know, all the money that was going to be left over after they paid for their own rebuilding?

It's bad enough that Bu$hCo is spending billions of our money to rebuild Iraq, now we find out a lot of that money is going to repay Saddam's debts instead. What is wrong with this picture?

9. Iran probably deserves this money, but
shouldn't we pay down our own debt first!?

12. actually, that can't be the question...
The USA is now legally and morally responsible for the destiny of Iraq. That includes all of these questions. There is no such prioritization allowed.

10. More payoff to Iran
to not develop nuclear weapons, IMO. The electricity contracts, inclusion in pipeline projects, and now this.

Back-doorsy as it is, I suspect it's a good deal.
