Gephardt Attacks Bush 'Unilateralism'
Gephardt Attacks Bush 'Unilateralism'
BETH FOUHY
Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Democratic presidential candidate Dick Gephardt on Tuesday issued a blistering criticism of the Bush administration's "chest-beating unilateralism" in its handling of the Iraq war, which he said weakened diplomatic alliances and squandered global goodwill following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"Foreign policy isn't a John Wayne movie, where we catch the bad guys, hoist a few cold ones and then everything fades to black," Gephardt said in remarks prepared for a speech to the Bar Association of San Francisco. "No matter the surge of momentary machismo - as gratifying as it may be for some - it is shortsighted and wrong to simply go it alone."

Gephardt, the former House Democratic leader, reiterated his support for a congressional resolution that authorized the administration to go to war, saying he continued to believe Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction or was on his way to building them. But, Gephardt said, Bush's "utter disregard for diplomacy" and lack of a cohesive postwar plan left the United States isolated and vulnerable in an increasingly chaotic, lawless landscape.

"We've got 147,000 Americans there now, we're spending $4 billion a month in Iraq," Gephardt said. "It's not mere machismo to resist asking allies for help - it's absolute insanity."

2. Hello, Einstein Express?
Is it true you can rearrange the laws of time and space and send a package to someone in the past? Okay, I've got this vial of pills I'd like to get to my girlfriend six months ago. Also, this article, which I'd like to send to Dick Gephardt at September 2002. See, I was saying many of these same things back then, but Mr. Gephardt didn't see fit to listen to me or millions of other concerned citizens. We were telling him day after day that authorizing this bunch of bloodthirsty cutpurses to wage a war was a big, big mistake. That instead of working through diplomatic channels, they'd take their war authorization and run with it, to the exclusion of every other avenue of settling the situation in Iraq.

Well, Mr. Gephardt didn't listen to us then, and it cost him his job as Minority Leader. Perhaps he'll listen to himself 10 months later. It's worth a try, I guess.

In the meantime, thanks heaps for putting that shiny Yale padlock on the stable door, Dick. Now go back to your office.

4. Kerry and Gephardt voted for war
Kerry and Dean support NAFTA, while Gephardt voted against NAFTA. What to do, what to do...

6. Didn't the CIA tell them Iraq had nukes?
If Gephardt is bad because of his Iraq vote, than Kerry is equally as bad. I'm probably going to support the candidate that has a strong record of voting against corporate globalization, Gephardt.

7. yeah..
don't get me wrong, Gep deserves credit for sticking with labor against the DLC minders but on foreign policy concerning the middle east he's not very different from the neocon's.

I guess it all comes down to what's going to be more important in 2004.

10. Democrats are pro-war
They always have been - how many times did Clinton bomb Iraq? Remember the sanctions?

Gephardt should have voted no, so should have Kerry, Graham, and Lieberman. Since the Democrats have always been a pro-war party, like the Republicans, I'm going to stick to the issues that they are different on: jobs.
