A British soldier died today following an attack on a base in Afghanistan, the
Ministry of Defence said.

The man, who has not been named, was in the Royal Artillery's 29 Commando
Regiment. He died in hospital at Camp Bastion from injuries sustained when
a grenade was fired at the UK base in Sangin, a drug-producing corner of
Helmand province.

He is the fourth British soldier to die in Afghanistan in the past week, and the
third from 29 Commando. Fifty-two British soldiers have been killed while on
operations in Afghanistan since 2001.

The commander of the UK taskforce, Brigadier Jerry Thomas, said: "Regrettably
I must report a further death today. A member of 29 Commando Regiment
Royal Artillery died in hospital at Camp Bastion from injuries sustained earlier,
when a grenade was fired at our base in Sangin.

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan, March 8 (Reuters) - A German aid worker was
shot dead while travelling with colleagues on a road in northern Afghanistan
on Thursday, a provincial governor said.

Sar-e-Pul Governor Sayed Mohammad Iqbal Nib blamed "terrorists" for the
attack, adding no one else had been hurt.
