(Elko) Free Press readers back Ann Coulter
http://www.elkodaily.com/articles/2007/03/09/news/breaking_news/breaking1.txt

ELKO — Readers have sent a clear message to the Elko Daily Free Press: Keep printing Ann Coulter’s opinion column.

In response to being flooded by thousands of e-mails from a gay and lesbian advocacy group, the newspaper asked local readers to call or write with their opinions on whether the controversial columnist should stay in the paper.

“As of this morning we had received nearly 60 phone calls or faxes, and about nine out of 10 wanted us to keep running Ann Coulter,” said managing editor Jeff Mullins.

... “Many callers said they thought Ann Coulter had a right to express herself, and they did not want us to be swayed by those seeking her removal,” Mullins said. “Several said they would consider it censorship, and added that they would no longer subscribe to the paper if we ‘caved in’ to the special-interest group’s request.”

they are listening to the people who pay for the paper, read the paper, live in Elko.

Gotta go with what the people who actually READ their paper want, after all it's their hometown paper.

Guess they like bigots there.

8. There probably isn't a single soul in Elko who would take offense
at the word "faggot". Any who might have at one time have no doubt been run out (ie beaten up) of town years ago.

I have some family up there. It's an unenlightened backwater with truck stops.

16. A lot of the surrounding towns don't have phone service
To give you some idea of where Elko is, it's about halfway between Reno and Salt Lake City. That's pretty much the textbook definition of the middle of nowhere, and the surrounding area is dirt poor and very sparsely populated.

I know a fair number of people out that way (my late grandmother lived out in Crescent Valley) and one thing it's important to keep in mind is that in these small towns out there in the desert the church- and there's often just one in town or even in driving distance- runs the town's social life. Defying the small-minded and bitter weirdo who had the poor luck to get assigned leading the spiritual life of a town that's only three dozen trailers in the high desert often means risking ostracism. Even if you manage to get an idea contrary to the word of the town preacher in your head, unless you're very popular with your neighbors the best thing to do is to shut up about it.

19. Thats Funny
The church runs your social life. This little town of elko, population over 30,000 has 6 legal brothels couldn't,t count the saloons that are open 24 hours a day, a half dozen big casinos. Most are employed by the gold mines (20 plus an hour) with benefits. Have you been here lately? I have been here 30 years.

23. You must be talking about Wendover
The church does run the social life in that town. Thats on the boarder of utah and nevada about 120 miles from salt lake city the mormons come in droves on the weekends to drink and Gamble. All joking aside i know where crescent valley is, i maintain the rail road crossings at beowawe about 5 miles north of crescent valley.

27. My grandma's up in the little cemetary up on the hill with the big cross.
I haven't been out there since her service, but last I was there the minister was having conniptions that his poor previously homeschooled daughter had to learn about evolution in her science classes at UNR. Nobody batted an eyelash at his shock and horror at the idea of a public university teaching science in science classes. Well, except me, my sister the school teacher in training, and my aunt who just retired from UNR and put two daughters through school there, I'm sure you could have knocked any of us over with a feather.

30. I have a fondness for Elko.
I'd never live there, but I enjoy passing through and spending the night. I always mean to go to the "East Nevada History Museum." I know the culture is backward in many respects, but not terribly so. It's more of a time delay thing.

32. conservative crap in democratic drag
as usual, conservative sentiment is masquerading in democratic drag

the free-speech argument against dropping Coulter makes no sesne. It is in fact an exercise of free speech *to* drop her, since thousands want her out, she goes out.

Also, the first amendment says *Congress* shall pass no *laws* that inhibit free speech.

Guess what, Congress isn't banning Ann Coulter, individual newspapers are dropping her.

So they should take their backwards, conservative heads out of their rearward looking asscracks and see the light of day.

god i hate them.

36. The "free speech" excuse is, indeed, a cop-out...
...but the "profit motive" excuse is the one that's really keeping her in those papers. A newspaper will listen to the wishes of its paying readership over a thousand anonymous internet users 95 times out of 100. If the hometown readership are a bunch of knuckle-draggers, so be it.

Btw, welcome to DU. :hi:

34. fine, keep track of that. make sure not one dime of federal money ever come anywhere near Elko
Edited on Sat Mar-10-07 06:51 AM by anotherdrew
they've shown how they want to play, now it's time for paybacks, and it better be a bitch for these fools. I really want these people to pay a dear price for their hatred, and it is our duty, yes our obligation to use every possible lever to fuck these people over as far as possible. That is exactly what the bush admin has been doing to us since day one, and now it's time for paybacks, it's time to hurt these bastards, outsource all their jobs, and don't let one dime of federal pork into their county.

I know it sounds harsh, but seriously, do you think anything other than exactly that has been going on since the bush pigs took office? I guarantee you that outsourcing, and any and every other 'trend' took off because the bush admin signaled that it's free and clear and desirable and they knew full well that such actions would far disproportionally harm democrats. I guarantee you that the unemployment rate is much much much higher among democrats today than it is among repiglicans.

Hell for that matter it's time for openly partisan business, never again should one thin dime of democratic money go to a repig supporting company. Set up a parallel economy that does no business with these assholes.
