Germany's Schroeder slams U.S. missile shield plans
Germany's Schroeder slams U.S. missile shield plans 21 minutes ago

DRESDEN, Germany (Reuters) - U.S. plans to build a high-tech missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic are dangerous and absurd, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said on Sunday.

"The missile defense system planned by the United States and which is to be installed in eastern Europe is politically extremely dangerous," Schroeder said in a speech in Dresden.

"It is viewed, rightly, in Russia, and not only there, as an attempt to establish an absurd encirclement policy, a policy which is everything but in the interest of Europe," he said.

The United States wants to set up a radar system in the Czech Republic and a missile battery in Poland as part of a shield that would counter missiles fired by what Washington calls "rogue states" such as Iran and North Korea.

1. What's this? Another take over of another country?
No wonder America is resented, I doubt Americans would appreciate this in reverse.

belittled his comments. We now have a German conservative saying the same thing. I wonder what the reaction is going to be?

5. Considering the history between the Czechs and Poles, on
the one hand, and the Russians on the other hand, the biting response to Putin's comments wasn't a surprise.

Now, consider the history between the Poles and Czechs on the one hand, and the Germans on the other ...

could care less what the Russians think. Who can blame them after the way the Commies screwed eastern Europe following WW2. I'd be looking for a little protection in case Russia got adventurous again too..

What Russia did to Czech Republic and Poland is no matter close to what Germany did in WW2. Poland was on the verge of existance, if the war was to drag on for a couple of more years there wouldn't be any poles to talk about at all.
And Russia's tank armies saved the rebel Prague from total destruction and annihilation of the whole population.
I understand this is not written in American history books which is plain "Saving Private Ryan" material but do bother and read some more history literature before embarking on advacating stupid moves by our neo-con puppets in eastern Europe. Those quys seek nothing but confrontation with Russia.

7. NATO warns U.S. missile defense could divide allies
NATO warns U.S. missile defense could divide allies 43 minutes ago

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO's secretary-general has warned that a proposed U.S. missile defense system risks splitting the alliance between those the program would protect and those it would not, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

"When it comes to missile defense, there shouldn't be an A-League and a B-league within NATO," the newspaper quoted Jaap de Hoop Scheffer as saying in an interview. "For me it is the indivisibility of security that is the guiding principle.

Many NATO allies are concerned about the U.S. system, which would be based in Poland and the Czech Republic to shoot down missiles fired by what Washington calls "rogue states" such as Iran and North Korea.

The Financial Times quoted NATO officials as saying that the U.S. program would protect almost all of Europe but not the southeast, which would need an extra, shorter-range system because of its proximity to Iran.
