Evangelicals slam torture in war on terrorism

Mar 12, 2007 — DALLAS (Reuters) - A major U.S. association of evangelical Christians has condemned torture by the U.S. military and reaffirmed its commitment to environmental activism, positions that highlight broader splits in a movement associated with conservative causes.

"United States law and military doctrine has banned the resort to torture or cruel and degrading treatment. Tragically, documented cases of torture and inhumane and cruel behavior have occurred at various sites in the war on terror," the National Association of Evangelicals said in a statement.

"Current law opens procedural loopholes for more to continue," said the statement endorsed by the association's board of directors at its annual meeting in Eden, Minnesota, over the weekend. It was the first big NAE meeting since its former president Ted Haggard stepped down in November over a gay-sex scandal.

...

But divisions have emerged among the 60 million U.S. evangelicals as prominent figures publicly embrace causes such as global warming that are usually associated with the left of America's political divide.

3. abcnews.go.away.
Reporters take delight when they point out that Americans don't know the difference between Shi'ia and Sunni when the press is ignorant about the difference between Fundamentalists and Evangelicals.

6. Sorry
maybe I am just overly cynical but these religous people can kiss my ass. They have said almost nothing for 7 years..then when congress switches hands they all of a sudden care about poverty, global warming, and torture..hmm they didn't care about anything but abortion, gay marriage, and school prayer for the last 7 yrs. I think they just switch their issues based on whoever is in power. Also, the younger generation is abandoning organized Christianity in droves..they are probably just shilling out issues they know young people care about in a desperate attempt to keep money in their coffers.
