Corporate reimbursement of political donations results in $168,000 in fines

Thursday, December 18, 2003

(12-18) 16:05 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

Two Florida construction firms agreed Thursday to pay $168,000 in civil penalties for reimbursing employee contributions to political candidates between 1998 and 2002. Part of the fine is to be paid by the employees.

The Federal Election Commission reached the settlement with Centex Construction Group Inc. and Centex-Rooney Construction Co. Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., both subsidiaries of Centex Corp. of Dallas.

According to the agreement, former chief executive officer of the two companies, Robert Moss, encouraged employees to make political contributions and send copies of the contributions to company officials, who then reimbursed them through increases in their year-end bonuses.

A total of $56,125 in contributions to seven federal candidates during the four-year period was reimbursed by the two companies.

1. The article doesn't identify candidates or party
I'd still bet that the money went to Republicons.

The FEC said none of the federal candidates who received the contributions were aware that the contributors were being illegally reimbursed with corporate funds.

2. If the money went to Democrats
I'm certain the FEC would have noted that fact in their release.
