ALBUQUERQUE — Two New Mexico lawyers with strong ties to the state Republican Party met last summer with a top aide to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and complained about then-U.S. Attorney David Iglesias.

Mickey Barnett on Wednesday confirmed he and fellow Albuquerque attorney Pat Rogers met June 21 with Monica Goodling, Gonzales' senior counsel in Washington, D.C., to vent frustrations about a New Mexico voter fraud investigation.

"I just wanted to speak to them about that because the U.S. attorney in Denver had prosecuted a similar case. I'd already met two times with the FBI about voter registration fraud," said Barnett, a former state senator and ex-GOP national committee member.

The disclosure, in e-mails released this week by the Justice Department, comes amid fallout following the agency's firing, in concert with White House political operatives, of Iglesias and seven other former U.S. attorneys.

1. This article author jumps all over. Did these two people go to Washington
Edited on Thu Mar-15-07 12:48 PM by higher class
to complain that Isglesias wasn't moving on a case that they claim involved voter fraud by Democrats?

Domenici and Wilson called Iglesias on something separate involving contracts?

What is clear in the article is that one of the people who travelled to Washington (Rogers) to complain about Iglesias was the same person Domenici recommended for Iglesias's job?

4. good timeline here
~snip~

Dec. 7 - Sampson tells Kelley that "Domenici's COS (Chief of Staff Steve Bell) is happy as a clam and will get us (replacement) names forthwith."

Dec. 14 - Sampson tells Goodling, "FYI, WH wants this guy for NM USA, but Domenici is not so sure. Supposedly Domenici is going to send over names tomorrow (not even waiting for Iglesias' body to cool.)"

Jan. 5 - Domenici issues a news release saying he is recommending Jim Bibb, Glenn Ellington, Charles Peifer or Pat Rogers to replace Iglesias.

Jan. 8 - Bell tells Jennings that a "fifth name coming today. To repeat: (name blacked out) is our overwhelming choice and will take the job."

Jan. 10 - Iglesias asks Sampson, "I'm wondering if you could ask the Judge (Gonzales) if I can list him as a reference." Sampson responds, "You can list the AG as a reference - not a problem. Good luck!"
