Paperless Voting

Remember all the chads and dimples that made voting for President so chaotic in Florida three years ago? In a well-meaning effort to fix the system before the 2004 elections, many communities—in Florida and in other states—have begun to install direct-recording electronic machines (DRE), which instantly record and tabulate votes; some even use fancy touch-screen technology similar to automated-teller machines in banks. Computer scientists are alarmed, however, by the potential to manipulate the new machines. Internal documents from Diebold Election Systems, which has sold more than 33,000 AccuVote DRE machines, acknowledge that there have been security flaws, although the company denies that the flaws could allow a hacker to cast multiple votes or alter the votes of others, as critics suggest. Diebold asserts that the problems have been or are being fixed, but it is waging a legal war to have the embarrassing documents removed from the Internet.

When a right-wing, pro-business publication like Fortune turns on you, you are well and truly screwed.

6. Not only did they pick it up...
but they have apparently characterized it as the "Worst Technology" of 2003.

2. Oh well ...
There has never ever been a system of voting whether it be manual or electronic that is foolproof. Every one has problems and errors that are associated with it. More emphasis should be applied to thwarting fraud and properly informing voters how to vote.

God Bless America!

3. Very true,
but never has a system of voting existed with the greatest potential for error and abuse than this system.

7. Fortune got it right...It's the TECHNOLOGY that's flawed...
not just Diebold. Stopping Diebold only to have them replaced by another manufacturer of paperless technology would be a Pyrrhic victory indeed.

12. I don't see why we
are in such a hurry to adopt these devices. Why should we trust them? There needs to be a paper record. Period.

15. Someone here had an image
everytime they posted and I would love to have a link or copy of it. It showed three different examples of electronic devices giving receipts, a paper trail, and then quoted Diebold as saying they couldn't provide a paper trail. I loved it!!

If you have it, PM me because I don't get much time to spend here. And thanks! ;)
