4. I went to the worldwide earthquake list...
and there was one in Vanuatu only 2 minutes before the quake in Japan. I wonder if that means anything?

TOKYO - A small tsunami about 6 inches high hit Japan's northern coast Sunday after a strong earthquake rattled the region, public broadcaster NHK said.

Japan had issued a tsunami warning for the country's Sea of Japan coast following the quake, which the country's Meteorological Agency said had a preliminary magnitude of 7.1.

No major damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat based on historical data, and no warning was issued for Alaska, Washington, Oregon or California.

7. Tsunamis are directional
What will happen when the volcano on La Palma collapses? Scientists predict that it will generate a wave that will be almost inconceivably destructive, far bigger than anything ever witnessed in modern times. It will surge across the entire Atlantic in a matter of hours, engulfing the whole US east coast, sweeping away everything in its path up to 20km inland. Boston would be hit first, followed by New York, then all the way down the coast to Miami and the Caribbean.

In the models shown in that program there is no backlash. Whatever cause the tsunami pushes the water in one direction which continues in that direction and then fans out.

Japan Quake Leaves 1 Dead, 80 Injured

Sunday March 25, 2007 5:46 AM

By HANS GREIMEL

Associated Press Writer

TOKYO (AP) - A powerful, deadly earthquake struck Japan early Sunday,
killing at least one person and injuring 110 others as it violently shook
buildings and triggered a small tsunami that hit the coast, officials and
media reports said.

The magnitude-7.1 quake struck at 9:42 a.m. local time off the north
coast of Ishikawa prefecture (state), Japan's Meteorological Agency
said, about 225 miles northwest of Tokyo. The agency issued a tsunami
warning urging people near the sea to move to higher land.

A small tsunami measuring 6 inches hit shore about 40 minutes after
the quake, the agency said. The warning was lifted about an hour later.

Television footage from the quake zone showed buildings shaking
violently for about 30 seconds. Other shots showed collapsed buildings
and shops with shattered windows, streets cluttered with roof tiles
and roads with their pavement cracked.

By Chisa Fujioka

TOKYO, March 25 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake killed one
person and injured more than 170 in central Japan on Sunday,
demolishing houses, buckling roads, triggering landslides and
cutting off water supplies to thousands of homes.

More than 1,000 people evacuated to shelters after at least
25 houses collapsed and 200 others, mostly wooden with
heavy tile roofs, were seriously damaged by the 6.9 magnitude
earthquake, which struck at 9:42 a.m. (0042 GMT), media and
officials said.

More than 100 aftershocks jolted the area, including one with
a magnitude of 5.3 more than eight hours after the first quake,
and officials warned more could be in store.

A 52-year-old woman died in Wajima, a resort and fishing town
on the western side of the peninsula, after being trapped under
a stone lantern that toppled in her garden.
