WASHINGTON – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama accused the Bush administration on Tuesday of pursuing a policy of “social Darwinism” that leaves every man and woman struggling.

“It's a strategy that we've seen this administration pursue over the last six years, that basically says government has no role to play in making sure that America is prosperous for all people and not just some,” Obama said to applause during an appearance before the Communications Workers of America.

The Illinois senator said the attempt to “divvy up the government into individual tax breaks” may be tempting, but government research and investment is what has made advances possible in the United States.

Obama, John Edwards and Hillary Rodham Clinton addressed the CWA's conference, each accusing the administration of failing to look out for average workers and vowing to make changes if elected president.

2. It's More Like Genocide, Actually
Cold-blooded murder by the State of outcaste groups. Social Darwinism is more of a one-on-one conflict. Bush uses a cannon to swat a bunch of flies.

11. Maybe this will clear it all up.
Social Darwinists, such as Herbert Spencer and Walter Bagehot in England and William Graham Sumner in the U.S., held that the life of humans in society was a struggle for existence ruled by “survival of the fittest,” in Spencer's words. * Wealth was said to be a sign of natural superiority, its absence a sign of unfitness.* The theory was used from the late 19th century to support laissez-faire capitalism and political conservatism. Social Darwinism declined as scientific knowledge expanded.

6. Obama just earned some points with me. It is a term which needs to be spoken
for it states in no uncertain term the EXACT policy the Busheviks are pursuing. I mean, besides their criminal endeavors and treasons.

8. It's the classic paradox:
How come the last ones to believe in evolutionary Darwinism are the first ones to push social Darwinism. Do they not get the irony?

18. Excellent point.
I never thought of it this way. An idea we should utilize more of when our leaders talk about the future of the country.

10. We have to replace "capitalism" with the social darwinism phrase.
Social darwinism is much more accurate.

13. There's a reason for government; civilization hangs by a thread
Democrats will only win in a meaningful way when they unabashedly embrace the need for a strong government to defend against unfettered selfishness. Obama understands this.

20. Ironically, Bush and most of his administration would be hard-pressed
to define "social Darwinism," any aspect of Darwin's theories or even, for that matter, the "scientific method."

BFEE represents what Mencken called the "booboisie" (ignorant yahoos and damned proud of it).
