U.S. Opposes Provisions for Iraq Tribunal
UNITED NATIONS - The new Iraqi war crimes tribunal includes provisions taken from the International Criminal Court, which the United States vehemently opposes — an irony that the international court's supporters have been quick to note.

The statute establishing the Iraqi Special Tribunal was approved by the Iraqi Governing Council and signed into law on Dec. 10 by L. Paul Bremer, the top U.S. administrator in Iraq (news - web sites), on behalf of the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority.

It has come under intense scrutiny because members of the Iraqi Governing Council said this week that the Special Tribunal would try Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), though the United States says no decision has been made.

<snip>

It's very instructive that the Iraqi Governing Council decided to literally cut and paste the definitions of the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes for their tribunal from the International Criminal Court statute," Richard Dicker, head of the International Justice Program at Human Rights Watch, said Friday.

1. Ironic
and after all why should we let the Iraqis decide for themselves?
They are just children, misguided as well, just ask Wolfowitz.

2. On Dec. 10th, hmmmmmm! Interesting date indeed.
What was the rush? They don't even have a constitution yet. But for some strange reason on Dec 10th, they rushed through tribunal provisions.

3. December 10 was Human Rights Day

not a day that is widely observed in the US.

6. Thanks DF but I was sort of putting my little shiny hat on for this one
since Saddam was captured a few days later. I find it an odd little coincidence.

7. LOL Well, most of what some call shiny hat tends to be stuff I just

take for granted. It would never occur to me that they would announce that they had "captured Saddam" without having first done all the relevant paperwork :)

8. Exactly my point. Now would you care to wager whether Saddam
makes it through the trial? my money's on not.

9. Depends on what's in his "drip"

The only thing I am willing to wager at this point is that KBR and Halliburton will have very impressive 4th quarter numbers.

4. Ha!! Like the Bush Crime Family gives a damn about Justice for all
If there was a War Crimes Tribunal the BCF would be the first to take the stand. If not the first then the hardest hit by it because they're the one's that supplied the weapons and gave the orders.

5. We support only those laws that will not be used against us.
What a shabby, shabby display of arrogance and hypocrisy.
