Minnesota to Take Pigeon Eggs From Nests to Avoid Poop at Republican National Convention
Source: Fox News (sorry!)

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Pigeon poop has long sullied downtown St. Paul sidewalks, but the slippery, smelly mess is gaining urgency with the Republican National Convention coming to town next year.

Sticky foam, hawk balloons and nets haven't gotten rid of the birds, so officials have a new plan: stealing pigeon eggs.

After pigeons lay their eggs on rooftop nesting grounds, maintenance workers plan to sneak up through trap doors and grab the next generation before it hatches.

"We'll build them little condos. We'll keep taking the eggs, and they won't have little ones," said Bill Stephenson, the city's animal control supervisor. "Slowly they'll die off."

City officials also considered feeding contraceptives to the pigeons but rejected that idea on fears of also inadvertently sterilizing eagles or hawks.

I think they will have to remove the repuglicans also if they want to keep the streets clear of poop.

52. The cons don't want competition, only they can poop,
only they can make a slippery, smelly (and slimy) mess. Who do these pigeons think they are? To have another slippery, smelly mess would be such a distraction, given that the attendants are so attracted by such stuff.

It is Canada Geese, not Canadian Geese. Not related to the country, but rather to John Canada.

51. Equally nitpicky reply:
While the bird is, indeed, named after John Canada, it is now commonly referred to as a "Canadian Goose." Possession is 9/10s of the law, linguistically. See "normalcy" as a reference.

Also, it's perfectly acceptable to use a name as a proper adjective. What kind of sonnet is it? A Shakespearean or an Italian sonnet? Just because someone (okay, most of us -- including me) confuse Canada the man with Canada the country does not lessen the accuracy of the word Canadian.

12. Aren't Pigeons migratory?
If they are, how the hell with this reduce the population, unlike Passenger Pigeons, which were killed off because of mostly pollution, Pigeons are a lot tougher and they will just move back in. There are millions of these birds in many U.S. cities, and I doubt ONE city TRYING to take the eggs will reduce the population that much. I doubt its going to make a difference and why the fuck are they wasting money on this shit, literally?

26. What role do pigeons play in the food chain in St. Paul?
Are they a source of food for eagles & hawks I wonder? It's bad enough if they're killing pigeons for Republicans but if they are killing hawks and, god forbid, eagles just so Republicans don't have to contend with some bird poop for a few days, I think there must certainly be grounds for a major law suit against the responsible persons.

29. Pigeon facts for St. Paul:
Rock Pigeons are known to breed year-round. Pigeons are not a prey choice for most hawks and not at all for Bald Eagles (although pelicans have been known to nosh on them in Britain's parks). There are breeding Peregrine Falcons that do prey upon pigeons in St. Paul. (here's a falcon cam for the breeding pair in St. Paul: http://birdcam.xcelenergy.com/hb_day.asp?TOD=6)

Although the article is generally not specific, it implies that the pigeon control project is going to be limited to the area of the RNC convention. Doing it city-wide would be cost-prohibitive.

So there should be no impact on the diet of the falcons.

36. They could feed the birds contraceptives after the Falcons have bred.
That won't affect the adult population of Pigeons who will continue to defacate. Next, we will have a muti-Billion dollar contact to Blackwater for potty-training them.

Uh, don't they sell pressure washers up there in Lower Canuckistan? 'Cause they get pigeon shit off of side walks like nobody's business, AND they work on duck shit, puke, bum pee, just plain old grime and all the other ills city sidewalks are heir to.

Might be a better idea than trying to keep pigeons from breeding, that's a losing battle if ever there was one.

47. Now if we can just find that HIVE
and start stealing Republican EGGS, crack them! More like Pods I suppose, burn them!

They won't FIND any pigeon eggs, the pidgeons hide them VERY WELL, as they are SO embarrassed by their progeny that you NEVER see Baby Pidgeons.. know why?

Because of their breeding. Pidgeons came to the cities via a bizarre blending of two genetic sources in the early days of city building - Rats Mated with Escaped Canaries, hence the reason you never see the chicks, they HIDE THEM..

So the Repigs are screwed :)
