Iraqi criss-crosses country looking for son swallowed up in U.S. detention system
By Scheherezade Faramarzi, Associated Press, 12/21/2003 12:39

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) Hussein al-Jbouri was jolted from sleep. Somewhere in the house, his wife was screaming. ''Ali's back!'' she shrieked.

Rushing to the kitchen, a stunned al-Jbouri found his 19-year-old son standing at the door, thin and scruffy with bushy beard and long, unkempt hair. He had given up hope of ever seeing Ali alive.

''He just stood there, paralyzed. He didn't say a word, only stared at me,'' Ali recalls of the morning he stumbled home after five weeks in U.S. custody.

Ali had been wounded in the back when American soldiers shot up a car he was riding in. Witnesses reported seeing Ali and another wounded passenger taken away by troops. But nobody knew where.

4. Thanks for the reference to "Missing." Some of us haven't seen it
I've still not seen it, but know it concerns the kidnapping, torture, and murder of American Charles Horman by the U.S. supported regime of Augusto Pinochet. Damned sad.

Kissinger is still wanted seriously for his involvement in the murder of Chilean officer Rene Schneider, too, who threatened to stand in the way of the US-desired coup.

Concerning Pinochet, for those who don't know:

The Allende government was friendly with Cuba. Declassified US archives prove that the United States government approved funds for actions to prevent Allende's election and, later, to destabilize his regime. The role of the US in the coup itself has not been established, but a document released by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 2000 titled "CIA Activities in Chile" revealed that the CIA actively supported the military Junta after the overthrow of Allende and that it made many of Pinochet's officers into paid contacts or agents of the CIA or US military, even though the agency knew that they were involved in systematic and widespread human rights abuses. <1>

The violence and bloodshed of the coup itself was continued during Pinochet's administration. Once in power, Pinochet ruled with an iron hand. Dissidents were "disappeared" or murdered for speaking out against Pinochet's policies. It is unknown exactly how many people were killed by government and military forces during the 17 years that he was in power, but the "Rettig Commission" listed 2,095 deaths and 1,102 "disappearances". Torture was also commonly used against dissidents. Thousands of Chileans fled the country to escape the regime. (snip)

Pinochet, and pals

Also of importance are the volumes of info. available on the many torture centers in Chile, and the torture ship, the "white lady," La Esmeralda. Any search will tell you more than you can stand.

7. I just checked my link, and it didn't work. Hoping this will.
More people need to know just what kind of monsters we have put in place as the leaders of their countries. Everyone should read about the coup of Chile, the death of Salvador Allende, the murder of General René Schneider, and the disappearances of so many, many tortured liberal, or suspected liberal citizens.

3. Is this not exactly what Saddam was doing?
Iraqis being wisked away with no one knowing where they went to or if they are even alive? How about those two hundred they took away last week, do their children know where they are today?
