BAGHDAD, April 10 (Reuters) - Three American soldiers were killed and another was wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in Baghdad on Monday, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the military said the incident took place in southeastern Baghdad.

The latest deaths bring to around 40 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq this month, putting April on course to be one of the deadliest months for U.S. soldiers in some time.

Adds U.S. comment on helicopter)

BAGHDAD, April 10 (Reuters) - Three American soldiers were killed and another was wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near their patrol in Baghdad on Monday, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.

A U.S. military spokesman also denied witness reports that a helicopter had gone down in central Baghdad on Tuesday. Major Steven Lamb said a rocket pod on a helicopter caught fire and was jettisoned.

"A helicopter has not gone down," Lamb said, without saying how the pod caught fire.

casualties are certainly surging. Lousy bastard. Why aren't his darling daughters over there with a gun in their hands, being that the war is such a noble cause and all? Lousy rotten bastard.

If the death toll hits a new monthly record, it's all over. People will be marching on the White House with pitchforks.

20. That's why I think the draft would be a good thing. Start hauling
some young asses down to the local draft board for their physicals and I bet you'd see a lot more protests than you do now.

the children of those earning $1,000,000/year drafted first. Anyone with me on that?

4 U.S. soldiers die in Iraq 9 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - Three U.S. soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad, and another was killed in combat in Anbar province, the military said Tuesday.

The three were killed by a roadside bomb and a secondary explosion near their patrol in southeast Baghdad, the military said in a statement. Another soldier was wounded in the explosions, which took place Monday, the statement said.

The unit had been conducting raids against militants in the area, and had recently captured five suspects, it said.

Another U.S. soldier was killed the same day while conducting combat operations in Iraq's western Anbar province, another statement said.

14. That makes 45 troops lost in April, not quite 1/3 through the month

according to Reuters:

Bomber kills 14 at Iraq police recruitment centre

Four U.S. soldiers were killed on Monday and April is on course to be one
of the deadliest for troops in many months as more American and Iraqi forces
deploy under a new security plan.

The latest deaths bring to around 45 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in
Iraq this month, half of them in the Baghdad area alone.

10. now they are saying the reason it (the pod"?)caught fire was small arms fire
But Lieutenant Colonel Josslyn Aberle told AFP news agency the aircraft had not gone down.

"We had an incident. A helicopter took small arms fire but returned safely to the base," she said.

"The pilot had control all the time. It happened somewhere in Baghdad. We are still gathering details."

The US has lost more than 50 military helicopters in Iraq since the 2001 invasion with the loss of a number of soldiers.

16. drip, drip, drip....now it's 2 that have been hit with small arms fire
Two US helicopters have been hit by small arms fire during a major gun battle in Baghdad.

Military sources said both aircraft returned safely to base.

It is not known whether anyone on board was killed or injured.

There has been fierce fighting with insurgents in Fadhil and Sheik Omar, two Sunni-dominated districts in the Iraqi capital.
