Clinton, Obama Shun C.B.C.-Fox Debate
By Kate Phillips

Well, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama have decided not to participate in the Democratic debate that the Congressional Black Caucus institute and Fox News channel had planned for September in Detroit.
Their decision follows that of John Edwards from last week. Mr. Edwards was the first to decline both this one and one that was canceled by Nevada Democrats after liberal activists and several of the most influential lib-blogs had mounted pressure against Fox for its conservative-leaning programming.
This may likely scuttle the Detroit debate — C.B.C.’s debate with Fox — since only the second tier of candidates are left. The caucus also has announced one with CNN, which these Democratic candidates have said they want to attend.

This is the first I have heard that Hillary is skipping the Fox debate as well. Looks like a tripe play for us, and Fox is out.

1. I can't understand why the CBC teamed up with Fox News
I appreciate all the good that the Congressional Black Congress (CBC) has done over the years but hell, couldn't they have teamed up with one of the other networks?

10. Did anybody think to ask CBS,NBC or ABC why they didn't agree to host the CBC event?
Seems the other major networks should jump at the chance to host a debate.
Are they worried about ratings?

Regarding Fox News the words "Jumped the Shark" come to mind. They have become a the new media joke.

3. In other words, Dog pile on the dog pile! Fox deserves no more respect than that.
I'm glad to see that Fox is beginning to reap what they sow.

5. This avoiding of debates trouble me...
Look at it this way...

Alot of independents, centrists, and even fed-up conservatives watch Fox News Channel.

This is simply a way to reach them.

I think it's a bad move for any Democratic candidate to skip any debate based on the sponsor.

So they'll do it if CNN or MSNBC sponsors the debate?

Troubling.

9. But that is the mindset that enables status quo.
No one should say ENOUGH! ??

Then when does it stop?

They aren't a news network. They're a tool of the RNC, a propaganda mill, run by repuke operatives.

What would be really tragic is if we lacked the courage to stop enabling them. Let's hope MORE people follow Edwards' courageous example.

14. WKLAN. Sorry, don't agree.
So let's see: CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network) gets a "Debate Deal," so everyone should go there and give them an outlet.

No.

16. I disagree with your disagreement.
If Air America were to run the debate, only a progressive minority audience would be reached.
What gains are made by "preaching to the choir" ?

Maybe you would prefer Ralph Nader,H.Ross Perot or what ever 3rd party -also ran - canidate hould be given the chance at speaking into an open microphone and adressing target audience ?
Which party would lose the most votes to a 3rd party canidate?
I think some network, any network should step up to the plate, take a ratings hit and run a debate.

Maybe the big four could simulcast such a debate, taking equal revenue hits.

17. Prefer your "big four" suggestion.
"FOX" is a pseudo-network, with no obligation to the public.

19. I haven't read the reasons given by the candidates,
but I applaud them for refusing to participate with those people.
In case you never saw it...Obama's pastor on Hannity, after Hannity accuses Obama of racism. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dDAySUywko
Obama cut Fox off after they ran about a zillion times this drivel that confused him with Osama, then on his middle name.
Good for them for refusing to be used by those fuckers. Shows them you can't have your libel and pretend to be all nice. Someone is paying attention.

20. so if pat robertson U sponsored the 'debate', provided
the moderator, and broadcast it on tbn, then it would be OK? Why should any democrat allow their message and their campaign to be controlled by the rnc? which is what fux noise is.

21. It's simple. Don't give FAUX any legitimacy what-so-ever. PERIOD. I totally understand and agree
with it.

Put it this way. If someone asked you if you were still beating your wife/husband, would you answer?

How low are you willing to go?

6. This story was one of the top news stories on AOL
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 07:22 AM by fasttense
I was so happy about it, I decided to post on the AOL board. The first post I read was about Obama and used the N word. I hate the AOL board it is filled with racists and bush lovers. Thank God for DU.

Thinking you will reach anyone on the Fox news network is like thinking the RNC will greet a liberal with open arms. By participating in debates with Fox news, a candidate is dancing with the devil. They don't have a chance of coming across as well as the republics, and risk coming off as an idiot. Supporting a propaganda tool like Fox will make candidates participants in a deceit.

7. amen to fox

I have made it a point not to buy anything that channel advertises.let the 35% of this nation support that bias sta. they won't though;a republican that pays his fair share is few and far between.
I say any democrat running for an office and refuses to appear on fox is a great candidate for the job!

12. I agree
I think that Edwards, Obama, and Hillary are insulating themselves from swift-boat attacks from Fox. Now anything that Fox says about them will be seen by centrists as retaliation for their not having been in the Fox debate. If they had agreed to debate on Fox, then Fox would have been seen as a legitimate news organization.

18. I hope the news of this is directly reflected in their ratings.
I hope this empowers the American public to bypass their channels completely, and discount and marginalize their reporting for the duration of the election cycle and beyond.

I hope it drives them out of business completely.
