16 U.S. soldiers hurt in Baghdad battle

By LAUREN FRAYER
Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD (AP) -- A raging, daylong battle erupted in central Baghdad on Tuesday and four Iraqi soldiers were killed, 16 U.S. soldiers were wounded and a U.S. helicopter was hit by ground fire at the close of the second month of the massive security crackdown on the capital.

Sixty miles to the north, in the mostly Sunni city of Muqdadiyah, a woman with a suicide vest strapped beneath her black Muslim robe blew herself up in the midst of 200 Iraqi police recruits. The attack killed at least 16 men waiting to learn if they had been hired.

The security crackdown, which began Feb. 14 and will see nearly 170,000 American forces in Iraq by the end of May, has curbed some sectarian attacks and assassinations in the capital. But violence continues to flare periodically in Baghdad and has risen markedly in nearby cities and towns.

The fierce fighting in central Baghdad shut down the Sunni-dominated Fadhil and Sheik Omar neighborhoods just after 7 a.m., the U.S. military said. After American and Iraqi troops came under fire during a routine search operation, helicopter gunships swooped in, engaging insurgents with machine gun fire.

Some Arab television stations reported an American helicopter was shot down in the fight, and showed video of a charred piece of mechanical wreckage that was impossible to identify. The U.S. issued a statement late Tuesday saying an attack helicopter suffered damage from small arms fire but returned to base.

1. Maybe McCain needs to go back and "stroll" down those same streets.
When are the fucking Republicans going to stand up to their little monster?

18. Finally?
I have been upset since this draft dodging, chicken-hawk 'decider' set foot illegally in my white house by denying African Americans from voting in Florida, claiming they were felons; then he sits like a lump on a log while our country was being attacked, while I was standing my post; then he declares war on the world claiming he is the sole superpower, pissing off all of our WWII allies; then he is cutting weeds on his chicken ranch while New Orleans drowns good Americans; all the time letting baron robbers raid the stores in a made up war killing my brothers in arms - What is this finally shit? I just think the rest of America is a little slow is all, but they are coming around?

Thank God for Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi actually speaking for the People rather than just rolling over in bed with him.

5. I fear that everyone will just accept all of this as the status quo
and not demand that we leave Iraq and allow the idiotson to invade Iran.

10. When you hear the phrase "U.S. soldiers wounded"
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 09:04 PM by Canuckistanian
You think, whew!, at least they weren't killed.

Now, go read this:
http://www.truthdig.com/dig/item/forgotten_wounded_20060117/

A little sample:
Mosul, Fallouja, Basra, Baghdad, a roadside bomb, an RPG, an ambush, the bullets cracking all around them, the reality that they are in a war, that they have suddenly been hit. No more John Wayne-Audie Murphy movie fantasies. No more false bravado, stirring words of patriotism, romantic notions of war or what it might really mean to be in combat, to sacrifice for one’s country. All that means nothing now. The reality has struck, the awful, shocking and frightening truth of what it really means to be hit by a bullet, an RPG, an improvised explosive device, shrapnel, a booby trap, friendly fire. They are now in a life-and-death situation and they have suddenly come face to face with the foreign policy of their own nation. The initial shock is wearing off; the painful reality is beginning to sink in, clearly something terrible has happened, something awful and inexplicable.

All the conditioning, all the discipline, shouting, screaming, bullying and threatening verbal abuse of their boot camp drill instructors have now disappeared in this one instant, in this one damaging blow. All they want to do now is stay alive, keep breathing, somehow get out of this place anyway they can. People are dying all around them, someone has been shot and killed right next to them and behind them but all they can really think of at this moment is staying alive.

On edit:
The writer of this story is Ron Kovic, author of the 1976 book, "Born on the Fourth of July"

11. I heard this story on NBC News tonight; they said they have no idea
whether any of these soldiers died or how seriously they were injured. I've googled for info to no avail; I imagine we'll here about their fates tomorrow.:-(

13. You might not ever hear about them
But you might encounter one of them on the streets in some future time... begging for some money or food.

If things keep going like they are today.

14. Troops vs Anna
I finally understand why all of the coverage of Anna Nicole Smith's tragic life is troubling to me. I am wondering why she is getting so much coverage in the news in the name of a tragic "human interest" story. I apologize for being blunt, but Anna Nicole Smith was a drug addict and a whore who was reckless with her life and the lives of those around her. She had "everything" and threw it away of her own free will. She was a "character," not a person of character. She did not, and her legacy does not, deserve the honor of our attention.

If you want a "human interest" story, tell the life story of each of our fallen soldiers in Iraq. These men and women gave their lives-- for us. They made the ultimate sacrifice. These are the people of character who deserve to be known to us. Let us honor them with media coverage. If the news profiled just one fallen soldier every day, it would last over eight years. Now that is human tragedy of epic proportions. Please focus on what is important.

20. "Hurt"? Makes it sound like they only got some skinned knees and black-and-blue bruises
How many suffered brain damage? Mangled limbs that will have to be amputated?
