"I made a mistake," Wolfowitz says of promotion
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Reuters) - World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz on Thursday said he made "a mistake for which I am sorry" over his handling of a promotion and pay increase for a staff member, Shaha Riza, whom he is dating.

"I proposed to the board that they establish some mechanism to judge whether the agreement reached was a reasonable outcome," Wolfowitz told a news conference. "I will accept any remedies they propose."

3. Translation: "I'm sorry I got caught."
Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush, Rice, Armitage, Gonzales, Ashcroft, Rove - the whole collection of these rodents needs to be tossed in a cell and the key needs to be incinerated.

10. Key? Weld the door shut
I so desperately want to see these men brought to justice, but I fear human justice as we know it will not be able to devise anything that will fit the destruction of two countries.

I suppose Karma/Final Judgment/Hades will have to suffice.

However, locking them up either separately or together with no human contact except with each other (and that's debatable) for the rest of their rotten lives would at least get them out of ours.

Edited on Thu Apr-12-07 09:27 AM by MissMillie
this is the least of Wolfowitz's worries at the World Bank. Apparently he's so gung-ho on promoting his moral agenda that the goal to erase poverty as all but been thrown out the window. No one there wants to work with him.

on edit: here's the story: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9525865

9. "moral agenda". Interesting.
Someone posted a thread up in GD, I believe, yesterday about how the neocons (under Leo Strauss) learned or deemed themselves some type of morality judges who were themselves above reproach.

Fucking batshit insane freaks is what they are.

Every last one of them.

13. Paul, the first rule of having subordinates is NOT to date them.
The second rule is: if you want to date them, help them find a new job first by providing a great reference.

The third rule is: if this doesn't work, then both of you deserve to get canned for cause.

To put it in academic terms, so that Mr. Wolfowitz can understand it, "It looks like you failed "basic professional ethics 101" and there is no makeup exam, no curve, and no scheduled retake of the exam. You have failed the class and it is a prereq for every advanced class. The tuition is not reimbursable, either."

18. "I will accept any remedies they propose." How about they fire your ass? Would that be an
acceptable remedy? It is what would happen to any other CEO who used the company's money to dramatically increase the salary of his girlfriend, regardless of where she worked. What is the point of having her work at the State Dept to avoid conflict of interest if boyfriend is still going to have the say so over her salary?

29. More details
I hadn't been following this:

<snip>

The World Bank President said that he would “accept any remedies” proposed by the institution’s directors, representing its 185 member countries, after he admitted personal involvement in the pay rise and promotion for Shaha Riza, his partner. A chastened and nervous Mr Wolfowitz told a packed press conference: “I made a mistake, for which I am sorry.”

Earlier it was revealed that he had directly intervened in the arrangements for Ms Riza’s transfer to the US State Department in mid-2005 to avoid a conflict of interest after his contentious appointment as head of the World Bank at the behest of the White House. Under World Bank rules, staff are banned for working under the direction of a colleague with whom they are romantically involved.

Details emerged of a memorandum from Mr Wolfowitz instructing Xavier Coll, the Bank’s human resources head, over the terms for Ms Riza’s secondment. This led to her being given an exceptional salary rise and enhanced annual pay awards, lifting her earnings to $193,000 (£97,600) a year tax-free — an $61,000 rise overall. The memo also set out arrangements for her promotion.
