White House Won't Rule Out That Lost E-Mails Involved Firings
Source: Bloomberg

April 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Bush administration acknowledged that some lost White House e-mails might have dealt with the firing of eight U.S. attorneys, as a Senate panel stepped up demands for more information on the removal of the prosecutors.

It ``can't be ruled out'' that some of the e-mails involved the firings, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel told reporters. The administration will ``take all reasonable steps'' to retrieve any lost messages and will ``certainly ensure that it doesn't happen again,'' he said.

...

The White House has also offered to provide copies of e- mails Bush aides traded with Justice Department officials and others. But the president has refused to turn over internal White House memos, saying he must preserve the confidentiality of advice given to him by aides.

Besides Rove, the Senate Judiciary Committee also wants to question former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and her deputy, William Kelley, and an assistant to Rove, Sara Taylor. Republicans delayed for a week a committee vote on adding Taylor to the list of presidential aides who could be subpoenaed by the panel.

1. All "reasonable" steps isn't good enough here.
That's true weasel words. There are a great many unreasonable, but effective, steps that could be taken, like putting the FBI's forensic computer people (I forget the proper name, sorry) on the case, making it a high priority and having the hard drives and the Blackberrys' scoured for the content. I have been measured in my language on this issue but, in this case, it's plain and simple: unreasonable steps that nonetheless will actually work damn well should be taken.

2. Bush doesn't use e-mail...so HOW can he claim this:
" But the president has refused to turn over internal White House memos, saying he must preserve the confidentiality of advice given to him by aides."

If the e-mail isn't addressed to him, then it can't be considered executive privilege of this type.

I bet she can demonstrate how you can contort your body and accidentally erase 18 months worth of emails

5. It won't happen again?
It shouldn't have happened this time. This is destruction of evidence and obstruction of justice, plain and simple. Not to mention a violation of several laws under federal records keeping statutes, which are pretty clear (despite mealy-mouthed administration statements to the contrary) about what must be retained.

7. Oh, well, if it won't happen again
Then I don't think there's anything else to do here. I mean, I think we all remember just how understanding the then-majority Republicans were when Hillary Clinton couldn't find her billings from The Rose Law Firm before they finally turned up and completely vindicated her story. They dropped the whole issue immediately and apologized for their unfounded suspicions.

Or is my memory entering Albertoland?

That's the Bush administration seeing how far they can push America - and after 6 years of getting away with it, they know just how much America will take and still NOT do anything about it.

but it won't happen again
