Report: carbon emissions up 18 percent since 1990

MONTPELIER, Vt. --Emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide rose 18 percent in the United States from 1990 to 2004, with Texas and Nevada leading the way, an environmental group reported Thursday.

Among the findings:

--Texas' carbon emissions grew by 95.8 million metric tons during the period, the largest increase of any state, followed by Florida, Illinois, North Carolina and Georgia.

--Fast-growing Nevada ranked first for percentage growth in carbon emissions, at 55 percent, followed by Arizona (54), New Hampshire (50) and South Carolina (45).

--Carbon emissions from power generation grew by 28 percent and by 23 percent in the transportation sector, with vehicle miles traveled growing fastest in the state of Florida, up 79 percent during the period.

-- In Maine, carbon dioxide emissions increased 24 percent between 1990 and 2004.

"Global warming pollution is skyrocketing in the United States just as scientists are sounding alarms that we must rapidly reduce pollution to protect future generations," said Emily Figdor, director of the Washington, D.C.,-based U.S. Public Interest Research Group. "This report is a wake-up call to cap pollution levels now before it is too late."

1. "Fast-growing Nevada ranked first..." continuing to prove the adage we rank high in everything...
...we want to be low in and low in everything we want to be high in.

Also, it's not our fault: The Californians keep moving here in droves, the dirty dregs.

;) :P

2. And no end in sight.

Finally. Not that I like it. But I am not sounding like some pessimistic crybaby. For the last however many years now, I've been screaming and shouting this to deaf ears.

Just two days ago I mentioned being frugal, and an entire forum of guys flamed the shit out of me. This is on a bicycling forum, no less.

This threatens our very existence. Manufacturing, energy production, driving, food. But just dare and threaten even driving, and people freak out.

Well I've got news for people, driving is the least of it. I've been waiting for this day for thirty some years. I thought people had brains enough to change before the crisis. It doesn't look that way.

What can we do? Our numbers are too great, and we are dependent on petroleum now. It's suicide.

We need to know the carbon emissions for everything we do. That's the starter. It sounds simple, but it's so revealing we'd be forced to make huge changes in our lives once we knew. What is it, three liters of fuel for every half pound of beef? And so on.

3. I am fairly ignorant on these subjects
But when considering the economy has grown more than 60% since 1990, this increase doesn't seem as substantial.

5. Don't forget that from 1990 to July 2004 the population increase
was just about 17.8%.

Gee. Bigger economy, 18% population increase and 18% more carbon emitted. Frankly, I'm shocked it wasn't more like 30%. I mean, just all the servers that have been added ...
