6-month IRS reprieve after Virginia Tech (victims, families, employees)
Source: Monsters and critics (UK)

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- The U.S. Internal Revenue Service granted a six-month tax-filing and payment extension to people affected by the Virginia Tech shootings in Blacksburg, Va.

'Taxes are the last thing the Virginia Tech family should be worried about at this time,' IRS Commissioner Mark Everson said. 'Our hearts go out to the people affected by this tragic event.'

The extension applies to the victims, their families, emergency responders and university students and employees, the IRS said.

Affected taxpayers now have until Oct. 15 to file and make payments associated with their 2006 individual tax returns without penalty.

1. No offense to anyone, but what the hell does one have to do with the
other? And isn't it too late to be so magnanimous? Ugh, if true.

3. In the midst of things on Monday some people may have forgotten to file
or, needless to say, may have been unable to file.

4. are there emergency execptions in general?
if someone has some catastrophic event happen to them a few days before tax time, can they get an extention too?

Or is that just for high-profile tragedies?

6. yeah, what about all the other people who had a family member murdered that day?
My sister-in-law was murdered by her abusive ex-spouse in front of their 2 kids, and it barely made the news at all. Just another guy killing his significant other. There was a tiny article in the local paper (suburb of Denver) the next day. I don't think it made the Denver papers. No coverage of the trial whatsoever. (Fortunately we had a very aggressive and good DA who appealed the alcoholic judge's decision that he could only go for at most a 2nd-degree conviction to the CO Supreme Court and won, ultimately getting a first-degree murder conviction. In CO, at least at that time, 1st-degree = mandatory life sentence with no possibility of parole for 40 yrs.)

7. I'm sorry that you went through that experience. Thank Spirit that justice was done.
I'm sure that the last thing that these families have on their minds is taxes. I would be planning my own demise if my child died. I think that, ultimately, those family members who are helping them might be grateful, however.

It is true that anyone can file for an extension. I know that we have before. I think that you have to pay what you think that you owe, approximately. I know that there is some leeway. I'm glad that there is even more leeway here. I used to visit the local Victim's Advocate's office when I was a social worker. One time, I asked for help delaying tax problems, and the advocate was able to help me. Of course, the current administration is busy cutting funds that help crime victims. Just ask my sister - an active social worker.

Oh, Geez, words fail me. I guess we really have a long way to go to have an adequate sytem for dealing with these tragedies.

10. Anyone can file for an automatic six-month extension on filing taxes,
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 08:13 PM by mcscajun
but not on paying them. The IRS ruling in this case makes the filing for the extension unnecessary, and grants an extension on payment. It's the least the gov't can do.

5. Wow. That's really comforting
And not only do the 33 dead people not have to file, but all the witnesses -- including those who watched it on TV all the way from the other coast -- don't have to file either. And neither does anyone who didn't see the footage but was traumatized just by reading various posts on bulletin boards like DU. And neither do any posters' friends, who may have been traumatized just by hearing about it second-hand. And they have friends who....

Pretty soon, nobody in the country has to file, which is as it should be considering how these vampires spend the money. Viva the silent revolution. No money, no war. No war, no more incoherent Bush pronouncements about freedom's on the march and bring 'em on and mission accomplished and all the rest of his bloody minded babbling.

The only thing I'm willing to fund these days is the salaries of congressional investigators who are building an air-tight case against the entire Bush junta. Now that's money well spent.

I'm also willing to spring for plane tickets to take them to Abu Ghraib, where they'll be treated to a big American welcome, featuring electrodes and waterboards -- for life.
