Breaking: FBI Raids Rep. Renzi’s Family Business
Source: Roll Call

In a second blow to House Republicans this week, the FBI raided a business tied to the family of Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.) Thursday afternoon as part of an ongoing investigation into the three-term lawmaker.

Details of the raid on Patriot Insurance Agency in Sonoita, Ariz., were not immediately available. Renzi’s most recent financial disclosure form lists the business as an asset belonging to his wife, Roberta, and valued at $1 million to $5 million.

Little is known about the inquiries into Renzi’s activities, but according to media reports the Justice Department has been running a two-track investigation into Renzi regarding a land deal, as well as a piece of legislation he helped steer that may have improperly benefited a major campaign contributor. It was not immediately clear which investigation the raid pertained to, and neither his attorney nor his spokesman could be immediately reached for comment.

As a result of the raid, Renzi is stepping down from his seat on the House Intelligence Committee, according to a statement from his office obtained Thursday evening by Roll Call.

“Today, the FBI came to my family’s business to obtain documents related to their investigation,” Renzi said. “I view these actions as the first step in bringing out the truth. Until this matter is resolved, I will take a leave of absence from the House Intelligence Committee. I intend to fully cooperate with this investigation.”

4. Let's hope it is not a show......
to back up the statement (that I think I heard)in the Gonzales hearing today. Someone pointing at the Doolittle raid as proof the attorney firings didn't impede investigations.

Pull these raids only to completely exonerate all when the dust settles.

5. Is there really any doubt that the GOP has morphed into the 21st Century Organized Crime Syndicate?
They can no longer recruit honest national pols to run for federal office...corruptibility is a character attribute of this Syndicate. They can't run honest politicians without putting themselves in legal jeopardy. The is getting really interesting. The rats must be singing bigtime...who wants to be left holding the bag for the GOCS (Grand Old Crime Syndicate).

Edited on Fri Apr-20-07 12:52 AM by MagickMuffin

The Center for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has placed Renzi on its list of "Most Corrupt Members of Congress" two years in a row. Both times, it accused him of sponsoring 2003 legislation as a way to help his father.

Renzi said he sponsored that legislation to help the largest employer in the Sierra Vista area, Fort Huachuca. Rep. Jim Kolbe said the legislation was in writing before voters elected Renzi, and when he was unsuccessful at getting it into law, he asked Renzi to sponsor it because Renzi was a member of the House Resources Committee. The legislation became law as part of a Defense Department bill. It limits the fort's responsibilities to preserve the flow of the San Pedro River outside its jurisdiction.

Renzi's father is a top official in ManTech International Corp., a major Fort Huachuca contractor whose employees made up the largest contributors to Renzi's campaign in 2002 and the second-largest in 2004. Kolbe noted that ManTech's contracts simply would continue at another military site if Huachuca closed.

"You attack my family and it becomes very personal," Renzi said. "So it's gloves off right now."

Renzi followed with TV ads that say Simon was the president of the American Civil Liberties Union, and the group defended the North American Man/Boy Love Association. U.S. Rep. John Doolittle made a similar connection to his California opponent, who is an ACLU member.

From the article it appears the GOP had nothing to use on their opponents, so might as well accuse them of protecting NAMBLA... Funny thing is I thought they were the ones into old man/young boy love:shrug:

The paragraph in bold text mentions Rep. Doolittle, because Doolittle also had his family business raided last Friday.

Edit: to clarify the bold text....

12. "Bomb, Bomb,Bomb, Bomb, "Bomb, Iran."
.....and McCain knew nothing at all about it. Rii-hiii--gte.

Wonder if this will be the "fun" part, as McCain likes to claim.

A week ago he spouted something about "always being himself, otherwise it's not fun anymore."

Maybe he should have asked Renzi a few more questions about that land deal and daddy's contracts before launching a presidential bid.

31. ManTech International Corp is no small potatoes
fedspending.com shows their contracts as

2005 - $570.6M
2004 - $537.9M
2003 - $502.1M
2002 - $371M
2001 - $279M
2000 - 371M

And that doesn't include another entity, NSI Technology Services Corp doing a Mantech Geo-Centers Joint Venture.

These are our taxes at work, doing...something.

9. Rick is part of our loyal gov't, if you have a problem with that... write to him---
Rick Renzi, First District of Arizona
418 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515
Phone - (202) 225-2315 Fax - (202) 226-9739

Rick welcomes your cards, letters and emails. If you disagree with what you think he has done, let him know so it won't happen again. At the very least, drop him a note-- it will comfort him during those lonely rehab moments.

11. Renzi's story is very strange.
His whereabouts are basically unknown for a period of eleven years and he was an unpaid Senate intern at the age of 41 as recently as 1999.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Renzi

Nothing illegal about that but when you mix it together with his dad's defense company funneling corporate money into his campaigns you see that some closer scrutiny might be called for.

19. For the tit for tatters out there....
this is very good news. However, are any of you concerned with the seizing of personal property by the federal govt? I mean, it happened first to William Jefferson, where they literally took cash from his office and now its happening here. Its disturbing and this is not what us liberals are all about.

20. Tit for tat? Um, these people are corrupt crooks.
Edited on Fri Apr-20-07 08:48 AM by myrna minx
William Jefferson was found to be taking bribes. If you haven't noticed, our government is brimming with crooks. Liberals are all about kicking out the corruption and bringing the light of day into government which discourages massive corruption. Whether it be Dem or Repub, the corrupt must go.

oh, on edit: Welcome to DU. :hi:

30. God trolls don't even try anymore
It can't be that hard for an freeper to sound like an actual liberal. Hell, I'm a pinko commie lesbian and I could probably pass as a Talibornagain if I needed to.

Here's a hint: work on your liberal buzzwords. Also, learn to use and love apostrophes.

22. I wonder if these raids are happening because Gonzo is distracted?
I mean, if Gonzo and his staff have been so worked up preparing for his big show yesterday that maybe it's allowed the FBi to actually do their jobs? Gonzo, Sampson, Goodling, etc are not there putting the kibosh on these raids?

28. UPDATE: To article!!!
UPDATE: CREW has background on the two investigations into Renzi. There are also suspicions that Paul Charlton, the former U.S. Attorney in Arizona, was purged in part because of his probe into Renzi’s activities. (Gonzales was asked about Charlton today.)
