Senate votes to put brakes on private toll roads

AUSTIN — The Texas Senate voted unanimously Thursday for a two-year moratorium on private company toll roads — although stopping those projects won't solve the state's bulging highway needs, a leading lawmaker warned.

The House already approved a similar measure in a nearly unanimous vote, reflecting considerable public angst over the possibility of transferring public assets to private companies.

A moratorium on private toll roads passing in both chambers means it's "more likely to stick," said Sen. Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville, author of the Senate's moratorium and a former member of the Texas Transportation Commission.

Gov. Rick Perry, however, opposes the moratorium. Nichols conceded that if the chambers take too long to negotiate the differences between the measures, Perry could veto it without giving lawmakers a chance to override.

5. I'm concerned that Nichols has only "changed his mind" for the cameras.
And that they'll take their time in the conference and let Perry's probable veto stand.

6. WTF is up with these psychotic privatizers?
Roads? Frigging roads? Since the invention of government in, oh, 6000 BC they have *ALWAYS* maintained and operated roads. WTF do we have a government for?

8. The government is there to enrich the already rich and powerful according to
the Republicans. If you help the People, it's welfare, therefore wasteful spending. If you help corporations/wealthy people, it's good government. :puke:

10. this is the repukes plan, once everything is privatized, the people have no one
Edited on Fri Apr-20-07 10:54 AM by Javaman
to protest or rail against. because once these toll roads are no longer accountable (unlike our supposed government) by the people, these companies can do what ever they hell they want

the repukes are all for small government as long as the corps continue to get huge to keep funding their lies.

the old saying will no longer be, "you can't fight city hall", it will now be, "you can't fight the ceo, he will fire you".

7. This Session has really surprised me....
The last session was so ugly, full of pig headed right wing nasty reps. This year has been a breath of fresh air. Some of the worst offenders were targeted and lost their seats (ass's I would say). Well, Perry may not have seen the light but a lot of others have. Folks are starting to ask questions and fighting back. Hope it continues.

11. Exactly. I try to explain that to people who fell for the "strong leader"
bullshit that moron* was supposed to have, but they fail to understand that the Texas constitution intentionally made the governor weak so as the people would have the voice. This was in direct reaction to how Mexico once controlled the territory.

perry is a wanna be fool. just like that idiot* in the whitehouse.
