Wolfowitz Hires Ex-Clinton Lawyer as Board Mulls Fate
Source: Bloomberg

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, under investigation by the bank's board of directors, hired Robert Bennett, an attorney who represented former President Bill Clinton against sexual harassment claims.

Wolfowitz retained Bennett, a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, a day after the board on April 20 set up a group to probe the World Bank chief's decision to give his companion a pay increase.

The head of the Washington-based global development agency also sent an e-mail to bank staff late on April 20, encouraging employees to focus on their daily responsibilities while the board deliberates. Wolfowitz has said he intends to stay and continue the bank's ``important work'' even as key members said credibility in the bank's anti-corruption drive was at stake and former officials called for him to resign.

``I've handled hundreds of conflict of interest cases, and this is a `nothing' case,'' Bennett said in a telephone interview in Washington yesterday. ``The scandal has been created'' by people who oppose Wolfowitz, he said.

1. Funny how a lawyer who helps an innocent man prove his innocence gets
the reputation as someone who can help a guilty man go free...

2. Why does the headline have Clinton's name in it....
the Wolfowitz problem has nothing to do with Clinton but the media can't help themselves when it comes to Bill Clinton. I'm sure many people hire Robert Bennett as he is a high profile attorney.

I kinda hope the World Bank demands his resignation and Bush hires him for czar - based in Qatar. That should create an interesting challenege to PW and his girlfriend. They would need to come up with another solution for combining proximity with another nice salary. Should be fun to watch.

9. Is it surprising that Wolfowitz has the right to an attorney?
How insane or antiAmerican would you have to be to suggest an accused person doesn't have a right to a fair trial?

13. Wolfowitz Hires Prominent Lawyer in Fight to Stay at World Bank
Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON, April 23 — Paul D. Wolfowitz, signaling anew that he will fight for his job as World Bank president, has enlisted a prominent lawyer who defended President Bill Clinton against accusations of sexual misconduct to help convince the bank’s board that Mr. Wolfowitz has done nothing to justify being ousted.

Robert S. Bennett, the lawyer selected by Mr. Wolfowitz, said in an interview that before the bank’s board acted on charges of ethical lapses, he and Mr. Wolfowitz wanted more time to prepare a case showing that the bank president had acted properly on all matters that the board is investigating.

“I am very worried about the rush to judgment,” Mr. Bennett said. “We just had a wonderful example of that in the Duke lacrosse case. I have reviewed the essential documents, and I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Mr. Wolfowitz exercised good faith and that everything he did was in the best interests of the bank.”

It was unclear whether Mr. Wolfowitz intended to pay his legal fees himself or whether he would seek reimbursement from the bank. His latest sign of apparent determination to keep his job came as the furor over his record continued to spread.
