Diggers again under fire in Iraq

AUSTRALIAN troops have again come under fire in Iraq as they tried to recover an armoured vehicle destroyed during an earlier roadside bomb attack.

Last night's small arms fire and rocket attack was the fifth assault on Australian soldiers in southern Iraq in two days.

The Department of Defence said a rocket hit the burnt-out hulk of the Australian ASLAV armoured vehicle destroyed earlier, while a second vehicle sustained minor damage from small arms fire.

"No soldiers were injured in the attack, which resulted in the Overwatch Battle Group West (OBGW) patrol returning fire," defence said in a statement.
