Pacific Daily NewsMark Zachares is talking to federal investigators about his knowledge of Jack Abramoff's lobbying activities.
After having pleaded guilty yesterday in federal court in Washington, D.C., the former Northern Marianas labor and immigration chief has agreed to cooperate with the widening investigation into Abramoff-related lobbying activities.
Zachares, 48, entered his plea to a one-count criminal accusation that alleges he was part of a conspiracy to use public office to get insider information for Abramoff in exchange for what the prosecution called a "steady stream of things of value."
Zachares became the 11th defendant to plead guilty in the Abramoff lobbying scandal.
"Guilty, your honor," Zachares said to U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle, when the judge asked what plea he would enter to a single count of conspiracy, according to a report by The Associated Press.
During the court proceedings, Justice Department attorney Richard Pilger disclosed that Zachares' wife also is in legal jeopardy, the AP reported.
