Pittsburgh rated 'most livable' once again
Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl doesn't remember the last time Pittsburgh was rated No. 1 in the country by "Places Rated Almanac." That was in 1985, and he was only 5.

But he grew up in "America's Most Livable City," and last night said he was glad to hear that the latest edition of the almanac has again put Pittsburgh No. 1.

"That was always the tagline and I certainly agree," Mr. Ravenstahl said. "If you look at some of the cities ranked right behind us, certainly they have great reputations, and it's an honor to be the No. 1 city in America. I think it's great."

David Savageau, who has been compiling the "Places Rated Almanac" since 1981, said he was hoping that this year's edition would have a surprise No. 1 that might create the kind of buzz the 1985 rankings did.

Summers might be nice, but damn if they didn't have those Ice Station Zero temps in the winter...

5. Climate is just one of their criteria.
They also take into consideration:

Crime
Cost of Living
Health Care
Education
Cultural amenities
Recreational opportunities

There's more categories, but I can't think of them right now. I think there are about 12 of them, though.

11. Precisely why Cleveland will never be on that list.
The sub-Arctic Lake Eerie wind tunnels that happen here 4-6 months out of the year and general continuous grayness makes life and travel unbearable. That and the high unemployment, crackhead-littered streets, 3 major sports teams that haven't won anything in 43 years, mediocre music scene, right-wing propaganda masking as a newspaper, poor street conditions, the horrible public transportation system (at NO time during rush hour should there be a one-car train. AT. NO. TIME. Get your shit fixed, I'm not paying continually jacked-up fares to ride 30-year-old one car trains that only drop you off at one place downtown) . . . eccch, I could go on and on.

56. Like I said, not trying to bad-mouth the place. But one of the big factors in these rankings is
"cost of living". Cost of living is directly tied, in many cases, to how many people want to live somewhere. For instance, you'll never see Marin County listed on one of these deals, even though it's a wonderfully nice place to live--

because it's expensive as hell--

because everyone wants to live there.

9. Looks like Pittsburgh made it to the top not via excellence, but good overall averages
From the article (the piece contains misspellings)

"There are nine categories: housing affordability (cost of living); transportation; jobs; education; climate; crime; health care; recreation; and ambience <sp> (museums, performing arts, restaurants and historical districts).

The seven-county area that makes up Pittsburgh failed to finish in the top 20 in any of the categories, ranging from a competitive 21st in recreation and 29th in education to a less-than-stellar 111th in housing and 135th in climate. But when the numbers are added up, the one that counts is the final total."

Looks as though the big winner was the bay area in northern california, with San Francisco and Sunnyvale/San Jose making the list.

37. My in-laws lived in Pleasant Hills and my husband graduated from Baldwin High School.
I don't think he ever saw a real live black person until he went in the Air Force in 1972. Looking back on his upbringing, I realize now his family must have been scandalized when he hooked up with this hippie chick and decided to stay in the Northwest.

We moved from Portland to Pittsburgh in 1981, and I worked at Presbyterian-University Hospital (which is named something else, now) at Pitt. Pittsburgh really is a beautiful city, and if I had known I was only going to be there a year I probably would have loved it instead of wasting time being miserable and homesick.

I've never seen so many brick houses! And people I worked with made fun of my "California accent." I remember my mother-in-law not understanding what I was talking about when I said "TOW-el" instead of "taa-a-al" when I was speaking of a piece of terry cloth used to dry off after a "SHOW-er," or what she referred to as "shaa-aa-er." :banghead:

55. They clearly have never driven there
that place is like an ant farm. It is like one person wanted a road somewhere to the built it with no regard to planning or anything else.

Nice people and all but I was actually told 3 different set of instructions on how to drive to my hotel (that we had a line of sight to) and one guy scratched his head and said,"I don't think you can get there from here" true story.

Oh and the exit signs are up inbetween the support beams in the bridge.

"Turn back there" it should have said.
