BAGHDAD - A parked car exploded Saturday near one of Shiite Islam's holiest shrines in the city of Karbala as people were headed to the area for evening prayers, killing about 30 people and wounding dozens, officials said.

The explosion took place in a crowded commercial area near the Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala, 50 miles south of Baghdad, officials said. At least 30 people were killed and 50 wounded, said Salim Kazim, the head of the Karbala health department.

A car bomb exploded in the same area on April 14, killing 47 and wounding 224.

Many casualties in car bomb in Iraq's Kerbala

KERBALA, Iraq, April 28 (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded near two Shi'ite shrines in the Iraqi city of Kerbala on Saturday and there were many casualties, a Reuters witness said.

The blast hit near one of Kerbala's main commercial streets. The Reuters witness said he saw tens of people hurt and some killed.

KERBALA, Iraq, April 28 (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber killed
51 people and wounded 70 in the holy Iraqi Shi'ite city of Kerbala
on Saturday, police and medical officials said.

The blast occurred at a checkpoint not far from an important
shrine located among many shops and restaurants in Kerbala,
100 km (70 miles) southwest of Baghdad. The area was crowded
at the time.

Salim Khadhim, a provincial health spokesman, told Reuters the
blast killed 51 people. Khaled al-Ibrahimi, head of the Hussein
General Hospital, confirmed the figure.

on Saturday:

* KERBALA - A suicide car bomber killed 57 people and wounded 160 near one
of Iraq's most revered Shi'ite shrines in the holy city of Kerbala, 100 km
(70 miles) southwest of Baghdad, medical officials said.

* BAQUBA - A total of 27 bodies were found around Baquba, 65 km (40 miles)
north of Baghdad, police said. Fifteen decomposing bodies were found in a
field. All were handcuffed and had gunshot wounds. Another 12 bodies with
gunshot wounds and showing signs of torture were found in different areas.
