(Sen. Mark) Pryor: Secret Withdrawal from Iraq Could be Winning Compromise

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Senator Mark Pryor says his ideas to classify plans to withdraw from Iraq could be a compromise for the war-funding bill that was rejected by President Bush because of its public timetable.

Pryor says he doesn't need to again propose his idea to make withdrawal plans secret because he had already introduced it earlier this year. Last night, Bush vetoed the $124 billion war bill that called for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by October 1.

Pryor says he voted for the measure because he supported the troops, but still opposes a public timeline.

3. No thanks, we've had enough secret bullshit for several lifetimes.

That is another reform long overdue: official secrets need to be declassified within ten years. Classification needs to be reviewed on a regular basis with the burden of proof on retaining classification rather than getting rid of it. The federal government needs a sunshine act that forces its activities out in the open documented and publicly accessible unless there is an overwhelming reason to keep specific activities secret.
