KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Suspected Taliban militants ambushed
a NATO convoy in southern Afghanistan early Tuesday, and a
gunshot victim said soldiers fleeing the scene shot him and killed
a man in a bakery.
Cordon Leader Peter Earling, a spokesman for NATO's International
Security Assistance Force in Kandahar, said militants ambushed
the convoy around 1 a.m. in Kandahar city, the Taliban's former
stronghold.
A NATO statement said that "initial reports indicate that there
may have been civilian casualties," but neither the statement nor
Earling specified if the casualties were caused by gunfire from
the militants or NATO soldiers.
Earling said a local worker was wounded and that an investigation
was under way.
