US urges World Bank give Wolfowitz 'fair process'
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, May 8 (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury on Tuesday urged a World Bank panel allow bank President Paul Wolfowitz "sufficient time" to respond to findings that he broke rules by directing a promotion and pay rise for his companion.

Treasury spokesperson Brookly McLaughlin said Wolfowitz deserved a fair process, amid the controversy over his handling of the promotion and pay deal he oversaw for his companion, Shaha Riza, a Middle East expert at the bank who was transferred to the U.S. State Department in 2005 to avoid conflict of interest problems.

"From the start Secretary Paulson has said that President Wolfowitz is a dedicated public servant and deserves a fair process rather than a rush to judgment," McLaughlin told Reuters, referring to U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

"That includes sufficient time to review the ad hoc committee's report and respond, as well as sufficient time for the ad hoc committee to consider his response to the report," McLaughlin said.

"Anything less than a fair process would reflect poorly on an institution as important and respected as the World Bank," she added.

Perhaps we should concider todays Wall Street Journal Editorial. Now I am no Wolfowitz fan. But I have to wonder if perhaps those seeking his ouster aren't supporting their own cronyism by trying to get rid of another.

Edited on Wed May-09-07 11:15 AM by Zynx
It literally does not matter what the facts are on any issue to those guys. They'll spin, omit, or just plain make something up in order to base their argument in something.

In this case, Wolfowitz is their boy, and has been since before the Iraq war. Their opinion is biased and worthless.

White House: Give Wolfowitz Fair Hearing

JEANNINE AVERSA | AP | May 9, 2007 12:23 PM EST

WASHINGTON — Embattled World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz deserves a "fair process and a fair hearing of the facts" surrounding his involvement in arranging a promotion and pay package for his girlfriend, the White House said Wednesday.

The comments from presidential counselor Dan Bartlett came as the international lending institution's 24-member board edged closer to a decision on Wolfowitz's fate.

The controversy over Wolfowitz's handling of the 2005 promotion and compensation package for bank employee Shaha Riza has prompted calls for his resignation.

Wolfowitz attorney, Robert Bennett, has been pressing the bank to have more time for his client to defend himself. Specifically he wants more time to respond to a report by a special bank panel that accuses Wolfowitz of circumventing bank rules when he arranged for the compensation package.

That's always their way. They clearly haven't found a divisive enough figure to take his place yet. Once they do, they'll throw Wolfie under the bus.

19. He should get the same type of hearing as Gitmo prisoners
Gitmo prisoners have their life and liberty at issue. Wolfowitz has only his job at stake. Life and liberty are far more important that a job to a rich dude so a Gitmo hearing is more than enough for him.

24. Fair process and a fair hearing?
But, what if he's an enemy combatant? Can we afford to take that chance? Do we want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud? There may be only a 1% chance that Mr. Wolfowitz is in league with Al Qaeda, but can we really be so naive as to think that Al Qaeda couldn't possibly have corrupted him? Better safe than sorry, says I. Let's turn him over to our good friends the Egyptians, just to be sure. You know?

25. He already had a fair hearing.
he went before the board and gave his side of the story. Then the board heard from lots of other witnesses, then they created this report.

Once again, the administration just thinks they can say whatever they want. HE HAD A FAIR HEARING.

LIARS.

27. Why? He didn't give Iraq and Saddam a fair hearing. The troops didn't
get one! The Iraqis didn't get one in their own country! They all got unfair hearings thanks in part to the "lick my comb" guy. (Whenever I think back on that particular part of Farenheit 9/11, I gag.)

28. Fair Trial? What a great idea!
You know, Wolfowitz can be fired from his job by his bosses for any reason at all. He serves "at the pleasure" of the board of directors of the World Bank, and the board wants him out.
But if we are going to require that he get a "fair process and hearing of the facts", lets extend that to the 9 fired USA's and open up hearings to determine if they should have been fired. It's amusing how Bush's notion of "fairness" is determined by the party of the person being discharged.....

31. Oh my God,
this is becoming unbelievable. The way they're hanging on!!! This is just amazing, there is NO WAY Wolfotwit can rescue himself at this point. The White House is truly demonstrating to the world how really DERANGED they are. How divorced from reality. They think they can dictate how things will go.

Can you imagine, the pressure that the Board of Directors must be under, right now? I bet the White House is pressuring them, like crazy "LET HIM STAY", "KEEP HIM", "YOU KEEP HIM OR ELSE".

And all this dirt is spilling out as it goes on.

"'Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, 'don't kill me.'"
