New York Post plans return to 25 cents
Source: Crain's New York Business

The New York Post plans to reverse its price hike of two weeks ago and go back to selling for a quarter, possibly as soon as tomorrow, according to newspaper industry sources.

The move comes as newsstand sales for the Post at certain high volume outlets in Manhattan have plummeted in the days since the News Corp.-owned paper raised its price on April 30 to 50 cents. Sales in certain key locations have fallen by as much as 20% since then, according to an executive at a competing paper who has been monitoring newsstands.

Post executives had felt confident that the paper could hold onto the slight lead in circulation it eked out over the Daily News in the last two Audit Bureau of Circulations reporting periods, even at double the price. Apparently, they were wrong.

Managers at two Grand Central area newsstands say they were told by sales contacts at the Post that the paper will drop back to 25 cents tomorrow. A newspaper industry insider with contacts among news dealers and wholesalers also says he's heard the Post planned to restore its 25-cent cover price on Thursday.

Gee, I can't imagine why a right-wing tabloid in liberal New York City would lose circulation after doubling its price...

24. Actually they do...
At least once a week I come across someone giving away stacks of free papers, ostensively "sponsored" by some local advertiser. Usually they don't seem to be much more popular...

32. Actually the Post used to a very LIBERAL paper
Actually the Post used to a very LIBERAL paper.

In the late 70s, I remember watching "All In The Family", hearing Archie Bunker put down the Post when talking to Meathead. Archie read the conseravtive Daily News -- "New York's Picture Newspaper" as it advertised itself.

Looking at its long history, the right-wing turn of the Post is a recent thing.

13. Wouldn't they still be ahead of the game?
Maybe they aren't very good with math but doubling the price of the paper and only losing 20 percent of the readership is still more money for them. For example 1,000 papers before would be agross of $250 now it would be $500 except they lost 20 percent of the readership so they would gross $400.00 now.

But I love to pick up a paper like Globe or Herald for a quarter!

Can you call it deflation?

Free magazines and free papers are everywhere in Boston. Cut throat Competition.

where they lost their most knowledgable staff and hired cheap inexperience help, and the customers went away in droves.

Edited on Wed May-09-07 07:34 PM by mcscajun
of the Post to all the riders (and the TVs on board the ferries were always tuned to Fox News. UGH. The ferry was a sea of Ugly newspapers. I often wondered if many of the riders would buy it on their own. I haven't bought or read the Post since their halcyon days of liberalism back in the late 60s and early 70s. What a different paper it was then; they carried regular columns by the likes of Pete Hamill and Jimmy Breslin (they even carried Art Buchwald's syndicated column back then). Ah the memories, before Murdoch  bought it and turned it into birdcage lining.
