Calvert's appointment creates concern
By Wendy Leung, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 05/10/2007 12:14:56 AM PDT

Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Riverside, was temporarily appointed to the powerful House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, taking the seat of Rep. John Doolittle, R-Granite Bay.

~snip~

But Calvert's appointment to replace a controversial congressman snarled in the Abramoff scandal is raising eyebrows because Calvert himself is under close FBI scrutiny.

Calvert, who represents western Riverside County, has caught investigators' attention because he had been receiving campaign donations since 1999 from a lobbying firm that has close ties with Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands.

The FBI had been investigating links between Lewis, a ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, and the lobbying firm Copeland, Lowery, Jacquez, Denton & White.

Neither Lewis nor Calvert has been charged with any wrongdoing. But that Calvert's name has been linked to these probes and is temporarily replacing the closely scrutinized Doolittle has some raising objections.

"Replacing John Doolittle, who's under FBI investigation, with Ken Calvert, who's under investigation for shady land deals, certainly doesn't `succeed in restoring trust between the American people and their elected leaders,"' said Fernando Cuevas, Western regional press secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Republicans need to get serious about ethics and accountability."

1. Where the Hell are they going to find an honest republicon?
They have shamed and dishonored themselves and America with abandon.

Are there ANY uncorrupted republicons left?

Apparently not.

2. The kindest thing I can say about little Kenny Calvert is that ...
...he is a fat ball of shit. I have known the little azzhole since he was in grade school. He was a whiny little jerk then and now his he is a whiny big dihonest jerk. He is a real estate investor/developer in the area he represents and he has benefitted land he owns with federal funds.

His dad Cal was a real man ~~ kind of even looked like Prez LBJ, tall and masculine ~~ and how he fathered that short stack of shit, Little Kenny, I will never know.

JMHO

6. LOL....
...IMO, Kenny Calvert is poster boy for the asshole Repukes from Calif. Kind of what is wrong with all of them, rolled into one POS, and a large dash of "whine" added for flavor! He is like a third generation carbon copy of Booosh. If you ever saw the movie "Multiplicity," you will know exactly what I mean.

Yep, a chickenhawk...who has NEVER been in the military...although his dad Cal was a WWII Navy vet. His dad was an OK guy ~~ even tho a Repuke. Kenny...however, is poster boy for the ultimate whine bag. This is th asshole who while a US Cong Rep was caught getting a BJ from a hooker (in his car in a city park) and was busted by the local cops and could NOT figure out why his wife divorced him. And then the asshole refused to pay his court ordered spousal support.

Real gem, huh? One of the "family values" people! LOL

7. A Brewing Battle Over House Committee Assignments
A Brewing Battle Over House Committee Assignments
Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives are involved in an increasingly bitter skirmish over one of the most routine congressional acts -- approving committee assignments.

Yesterday, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced that senior Republicans had approved Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) to take a seat on the Appropriations Committee, one of the most sought-after assignments on Capitol Hill.

Calvert is expected to fill the vacancy created by Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.), who left the panel after the FBI raided his home as part of an investigation into his wife's business connections to lobbyists. This comes as Republicans are still smarting from losing more than a handful of seats last fall that are directly attributable to ethical or legal questions related to longtime incumbents.

But questions have also been raised about a provision Calvert pushed that would upgrade a highway near property he co-owns, leading to accusations he pushed the measure for his own benefit. Some media reports have indicated a local grand jury is examining one of the land purchases that Calvert's business group was involved in, specifically probing whether the previously public land was sold appropriately.

8. I hope Doolittle runs again.
I live near his district, and it was amazing to see the election so close (3 points) last time. The area is so, so Republican that it was a real feat. I think that a Democrat COULD win the seat, but would have to play it very centrist to keep it against another Republican candidate.
