KHOST, Afghanistan (AFP) - Three civilians, including two school pupils, and a policeman were killed when Afghan border guards and Pakistani soldiers exchanged fire on Sunday, a governor said.

The fighting erupted in Afghanistan's Paktia province when Pakistani troops fired on Afghan border guards building a security post on the disputed frontier, provincial governor Rahmatullah Rahmat told AFP.

The Afghan troops returned fire, the governor said.

The fighting continued into the afternoon and the Pakistani troops were using heavy weapons including rockets, he said.

"Two school children were killed when a Pakistani rocket landed in their school, and a police officer and another civilian were also killed by Pakistani rockets," Rahmat said.

ISLAMABAD, May 13 (Reuters) - Up to seven Afghan troops were killed in a border clash with Pakistani forces on Sunday in the most serious incident in years between the uneasy neighbours who are officially partners in the U.S.-led war on terrorism.

Pakistan military spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said Afghan troops opened "unprovoked firing" on five or six border posts in the Kurram tribal region in northwest Pakistan. Pakistani paramilitary forces retaliated, he said.

"We have reports six to seven of their troops have been killed. Three of our soldiers have been wounded," Arshad said.

KABUL, May 14 (Reuters) - A Pakistani officer shot dead two U.S.
soldiers on Monday during a meeting over a border clash between
Pakistani troops and Afghans, an Afghan government spokesman said.

A spokesman for the Pakistan military denied that its soldiers had
shot anyone.

Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi told Reuters: "At the
meeting, a Pakistani officer rose up and fired at U.S. soldiers,
resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and wounding of two others."

He said U.S. soldiers had returned fire, killing several Pakistani troops.
An Afghan officer present at the meeting in Pakistan's Kurram tribal
agency was also wounded, he said.

7. Kabul protests Pakistan actions in border clash
More KABUL, May 14 (Reuters) - Afghanistan condemned what it called an "invasion" of part of its border area by neighbouring Pakistan on Monday and said such actions could have dangerous consequences for the region's stability.

A strongly worded statement from the Afghan foreign ministry highlighted the deteriorating relationship between the two Asian states, whose troops clashed in the southeastern Paktia province on Sunday in the worst fighting between the uneasy neighbours in decades.

"The ... Afghan foreign ministry considers this intention of Pakistan contrary to all international norms, good neighbourliness and against Pakistan's commitments during the summit between the presidents of the two countries in Ankara," the statement said.
