Militants admit plan to draw US to Saudi Arabia
Source: Indo-Asian News Service

Riyadh, May 15 (DPA) Suspected militants being held in Saudi Arabia on charges of plotting terror attacks have told prosecutors their main aim had been to draw the US into Saudi territory, Saudi media reports said Tuesday...

They also said they had planned to attack Saudi Arabia's Bqeeq oil field under the instruction of Osama bin Laden, the leader of the Al Qaeda terrorist network.

They believed that the US would have moved in to protect the oil field if the attack was carried out. If this had happened, according to the militants, the US would have been an easy target for Al Qaeda attacks.

Kind of puts the lie to the theory the neocons constantly spout that AQ is anxious to mount attacks in the USA, and that this is why the US has to fight them in the Middle East.

This confirms that what AQ really wants is exactly what Osama has written about for more than a decade, and what Bush the Stupid has already given to AQ -- an opportunity to attack the US without leaving the Middle East, where they can operate most effectively, and where the US is at a disadvantage, and has to play the role of the outside invader.

In truth, what has made this approach successful for AQ isn't that the idea is so brillient, it's that the US has stupidly played the exact role Osama scripted for it.

1. I thought al-qaeda wanted us out of Saudi Arabia
We got out, and now they want us to go back in? Why don't they make up their minds?

2. They want to confront the US in the Middle East
Edited on Thu May-17-07 02:24 PM by Bragi
They called for the US to withdraw from Saudi Arabia, which it did when it moved its military bases to Dubai.

But, at the same time, AQ wants to draw the US into battles wherever they can in the Middle East because that is favourable terrain for them, and because it is the best way to promote jihad against both the Big Satan (the US) and the Little Satans (the pro-US arab governments in the ME.)

Which is to say that AQ is a complicated outfit with fairly clear general goals, but with a highly textured, nuanced and evolving set of implementation strategies.

Which contrasts mightlily with the Bush appoach, which involves pursuit of ill-defined goals, framed using contantly-changing rationales, relying on consistently brutal, ham-fisted tactics.

4. Absolutely true
Getting the US to move back into SA and to occupy it to defend the House of Saud and US oil intersts would be as sweet as it gets for Osama.

5. Testimony given under duress isn't worth much.
No offense, not trying to annoy you, I agree with your attitude, but I think these guys would do one of two things: lie their asses off or tell the saudi cops whatever they wanted to hear.

6. Getting your enemies to pay travel costs is good strategy
All the better if the fight is to be carried out in your neighborls yard (at least, not in your yard). The neocons are so knee jerk, Pavlovian conditioned in favor of outsourcing, they don't see that they are being played. At some level they don't care, due to the profit and sheeple control potentials.
