Sen. Johnson calls for Gonzales to step down

South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson on today joined a growing chorus of Democrats who want Attorney General Alberto Gonzales removed from office, saying “it is time to return trust and integrity to the Justice Department.”

Democrats are pushing for a symbolic no-confidence vote, and with at least five Republicans, including Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota on board, they say the matter could go before the full Senate next week.

“There has been a litany of evidence that has come forth during his tenure that casts serious doubt on his ability to lead the Justice Department, and I think it is time for him to step down,” Johnson said of Gonzales. ~snip~

1. Is Sen. Johnson making public announcements? Last I heard,
he had been released from the recovery center and had gone home, but I haven't heard anything since, and that was a couple of weeks ago. Does this mean he will be coming back to work soon?

7. I see what you mean. When he said, "“There has been a litany of evidence that has come forth during
his tenure that casts serious doubt on his ability to lead the Justice Department, and I think it is time for him to step down,”

Raving lunacy, that. MKJ

GOP senator hit by car near his house

Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., suffered minor injuries when he was hit by a car Wednesday while walking near his home.

"The senator's morning walk was cut short by an inattentive driver rounding a street corner, but a couple little bumps and bruises couldn't stop Kit Bond from a full day of the people's business," spokeswoman Shana Marchio tells the AP.

Bond didnt' file a police report or go to the hospital. The Capitol physician's office took an X-ray of his shoulder.

In other political/health news, Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson is said to be making progress in his recovery from a brain hemorrhage. "Tony Dean, an outdoor television and radio host and a longtime Johnson friend, told radio station KCCR in Pierre that Johnson’s mind is 'keen,' and that the senator hopes to be back on the Senate floor perhaps as early as late summer or fall," the Wall Street Journal reports.

New photos show Johnson in therapy
Recovering senator walks with cane

Leaning on a cane and looking focused, Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota posed for a public photograph Wednesday while undergoing physical therapy at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, D.C.

It is the second time that Johnson's office has released photos to the news media since the 60-year-old Democrat suffered a massive brain hemorrhage five months ago. The first photos were taken in March when he was a resident patient at the hospital and confined to a wheelchair.

In the latest photo, Johnson - now an outpatient - is standing while physical therapist Marti Carroll holds his arm. A wheelchair can be seen in the background.

"He's taking steps," his spokeswoman Julianne Fisher said. "This is clearly showing people that he's not sitting at home during the day. He's working really hard in physical therapy."

In the March photos, Johnson appeared very thin. In the photo taken Wednesday, he looks stronger and appears to have regained some weight.

In addition to physical therapy, Johnson has speech and occupational therapy several hours a day, five days a week, Fisher said. Johnson continues to meet with his chief of staff a couple of times a week and is still doing Senate work at home, she said.

4. I wish public personages would go a little easier on the attempt to
be masters of understatement. Even Schumer is finally saying a little more of the truth-Abu Gonzo long ago passed the threshold of resign/fire and his continued presence has done more to undermine the maladministration than almost anything else, lately. That's a good thing.

What I find especially indicative of the total lack of ability to foresee the results of their actions-or the inability to give a damn. The comments of a white house representative to the effect that the senate's attempt at a "no confidence" vote, next week, is only a "political stunt" has undermined the justice department and the admin so that any business that comes from the USAs and the jd can also be rightly viewed as a political stunt, an attempt to silence a political opponent.

6. Johnson sounds far more coherent than Gonzo.
67 senate votes are needed to convict Gonzo if he's impeached. Senators have been wheeled in on gurneys for critical votes, so if Sen. Johnson can walk, he can put in a quick appearance on Capitol Hill if it gets to that point.

8. Great lead ... "growing chorus of Democrats"
"symbolic no-confidence vote"

"...Gonzales has been under fire for months over the Justice Department’s move last year to fire nine U.S. Attorneys. Lawmakers amplified their scrutiny this week when Gonzales was linked to new allegations that, before he took the Attorney General job, he led an attempt to get a hospitalized Attorney General John Ashcroft to approve controversial domestic spying activities..."

Nice wrap! Good lenses!

11. More from Sen. Johnson
The senator voted against Gonzales' confirmation in 2005, saying the former White House counsel was not qualified to represent the American justice system. At the time, many Democrats said they couldn't look past his participation in administration policies they said had led to abuse of prisoners that occurred in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"As the father of a soldier who served in combat in both Afghanistan and Iraq, I was particularly concerned that our nation's utilization of torture creates an environment where other nations and other organizations feel they have justification for torturing our troops or citizens," Johnson's statement said. "The American people deserve better."
