Mass grave found in Mahmoudiya , armed clashes erupt in Basra

Baghdad- A mass grave has been discovered in a house near a Sunni mosque in the southern Iraqi city of Mahmoudiya, the Sunni Association of Muslim Scholars (AMS) said Sunday. The grave was discovered Friday by joint US-Iraqi forces at the al-Sadeq al-Amin mosque in Mahmoudiya, 30 kilometres south of Baghdad. The mosque and its imam's house had been seized a few months ago by a militia linked to the Shiite Mahdi army, an affiliate of the Shiite Sadr movement led by cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

In a statement published online the AMS accused the Mahdi army of "using the mosque for torturing the innocent and killing them after kidnapping them."

The association called on international human rights organizations "to exert pressure (on Iraqi authorities) to guarantee an independent and honest investigation into this crime by neutral entities."

Led by Sunni cleric Harith al-Dhari, the Association of Muslim Scholars is the highest Sunni authority in Iraq. It was formed by a group of Iraqi Sunni clerics April 14, 2003 - four days after Saddam Hussein's regime was overthrown by the US-led invasion.

BAGHDAD - A suicide bomber exploded a tanker truck near a police checkpoint outside a market west of Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least two police officers and injuring nine others, police said.

The attack occurred about 10 a.m. in a town just outside of the turbulent city of Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, police said.

Police grew suspicious of the truck as it approached the checkpoint and opened fire when it was still 200 meters away, but the bomber still managed to detonate the explosives, police said. Police said they suspected chlorine gas was used in the attack. The U.S. military said it had no reports that chlorine was used in the bomb.

The statement from Allawi did not say where in Iraq Al-Rabe'ei was killed, reported Kuna, the Kuwait news agency.

The Accord statement condemned "the senseless assassination" of Al-Rabe ' ei "who was among the first to oppose (Saddam Hussein's) dictatorship and was also a good example of sacrifice to establish a unified democratic Iraq."
