Hagel doubts immigration debate will be fruitful
BY PAUL HAMMEL
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LEXINGTON, Neb. - Sen. Chuck Hagel , R-Neb., expressed little confidence that the congressional debate on immigration reform, expected to begin tonight, will result in meaningful legislation.

"We're going to do everything we can, but I'm just one senator," Hagel said at a forum this morning on immigration's impact on this central Nebraska meat-packing town.

Hagel left the meeting to fly to Washington, so this evening he could cast a vote to bring the issue up for debate.

1. Why is Congress going to "let this issue drift " until 2008? Isn't
this important? How can they just let this go? Anybody else frustrated?

2. The answer is easy for question 2.
Both sides are so heavily splintered to the point that no consensus will ever be found.

3. That's what drives me nuts about this--
If they can't get consensus on the "comprehensive" reform bill, why not break up each issue into smaller chunks? Start with a law to increase border security, then a law to crack down on employers, then a law to deal with the illegals already here? I can't believe it's all going to be scrapped for the rest of this Congress, unless Hagel has it wrong. This is going to make the Dems look "do-nothing", if they can't get anything passed EVEN WITH cooperation from BushCo, who probably would support this bill.
