Bomb in Turkish capital kills 5; 80 hurt

By SELCAN HACAOGLU, Associated Press Writer

ANKARA, Turkey - A bomb exploded Tuesday in one of the Turkish
capital's busiest commercial centers, killing five people and
wounding about 80, authorities said.

The blast outside one of the oldest shopping malls in Ankara hurled
glass and other debris over a wide area. A body, covered in a white
sheet, lay outside the building.

Private NTV television, quoting police sources, said the bomb was
made of plastic explosives, the type favored by separatist Kurdish
rebels. Militant leftists and Islamic extremists also operate in
Turkey.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

(Updates death toll, injuries)

By Selcuk Gokoluk and Orhan Coskun

ANKARA, May 22 (Reuters) - A powerful bomb outside a crowded
shopping mall in the heart of Turkey's capital Ankara killed six
people and injured 80 others on Tuesday, authorities said.

It was believed to be the worst in at least a decade to strike near
Turkey's power centre, which houses the influential armed forces,
the presidency and the government.

"We have seen a vicious, ruthless terror attack at Ankara's busiest
time," Prime Tayyip Erdogan told reporters at the scene of the blast
in the city's historic Ulus district.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but a security source
said all eyes were on separatist Kurdish rebels in the volatile
southeast and Turkey's military chief said he feared similar blasts
could hit other large cities.

3. Does this happen often in Turkey?
I'm being recruited to a job there and I wonder if it should be a concern or not.

5. There's a certain amount of it; government blames Kurdish separatists
Edited on Wed May-23-07 07:03 AM by muriel_volestrangler
A suicide bomber was behind the rush-hour blast that tore through an Ankara shopping district Tuesday, killing at least five people and wounding more than 60 others, the governor of Ankara said Wednesday.

Governor Kamal Onal identified the attacker as Guven Akkus, adding that Akkus had two criminal records from previous incidents.

The "act of terror," Onal said, was the work of the radical, separatist Kurdistan Workers Party -- known by its acronym PKK. Its fighters have been staging attacks against Turkey in the country's southeast and from the Kurdish region of neighboring Iraq.

There's the Kurds; there were also some attacks against synagogues and British buildings in Istanbul in 2003, blamed on Islamist groups - http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/europe/11/20/turkey.blast/index.html .

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey's government convened an emergency meeting on countering terrorism on Wednesday, a day after a powerful bomb blast in the capital Ankara killed six people and wounded 102 others, authorities said.

The rush hour explosion at the entrance of a shopping mall was believed to be the worst in at least a decade to strike the capital and came at a time of heightened political tension in the European Union-aspirant country.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who is also deputy prime minister, chaired the emergency meeting, attended by intelligence, security and military officials as well as ministers to assess measures for countering terrorism. No details were immediately available

8. It's all our fault. Whenever Muslims bomb other Muslims, it is
safe to say that it would not have happened without our meddling. Whether it is Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Gaza or Egypt, I am sure they long for the days when car bombs and suicide bombers were not directed at them.

I do wonder if the common people in those countries ever ask why they are targeted to teach Bush a lesson. If the bombing planners would just ask them, I bet they could come up with some better ideas - perhaps not killing Muslim civilians to prove how heroic the resistance to America is.

I have often thought about killing by neighbors (not really) out of frustration over voter fraud (they have nothing to do with it, but that should not matter), but just haven't been able to do it, yet. ;(
