Heffelfinger says something within DOJ is “broken“

MINNEAPOLIS — Former U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Tom Heffelfinger said Thursday he is “outraged” someone at the Department of Justice would think he spent too much time on American Indian issues, and that something is broken if a top Justice aide can compile a list of people to fire without knowing their backgrounds.

Heffelfinger’s own name was on that list, compiled by Kyle Sampson, former chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. In a January 2007 e-mail to a group of justice officials, Sampson said Heffelfinger and others “had no federal prosecution experience when they took the job,” Heffelfinger said, while speaking at a Hennepin County Bar Association meeting.

The comment drew laughter from the nearly 300 attorneys gathered — Heffelfinger resigned from his second stint as U.S. attorney for Minnesota last year and was an assistant U.S. attorney from 1982 to 1988.

“What is happening in Washington D.C. right now ... it’s very sad,” Heffelfinger said. “It’s also clear to me that something is fundamentally broken within the Department of Justice that goes to the core value of delivering services in all 93 federal judicial districts.

24 May 2007 // In a blistering attack that won a standing ovation from more than 200 members of the Hennepin County Bar Association, former U.S. Attorney Thomas Heffelfinger on Thursday defended his work on Indian issues and accused Justice Department officials of firing people without knowing the most basic information about their qualifications.

Heffelfinger, who says he had no idea anyone in Washington was thinking of firing him when he resigned his position as U.S. attorney in February 2006, has gradually become more open about his outrage over the controversy around the firing of U.S. attorneys as his name has been more publicly linked to it.

In remarks to the Bar Association in Minneapolis, he reached a new peak, saying among other things that "something is fundamentally broken within the Department of Justice."

And he read aloud from an e-mail, written by Kyle Sampson ............

3. Minnesota Public Radio played Heffelfinger's speech to the Bar Association today
As good as the article about it in today's Strib was, the printed word could not capture the outrage in his voice.

4. It's not broken at all. It is functioning EXACTLY as the Bushies wanted it to
which, of course, is nearly identical to what Hitler did to HIS "Department of Justice".

5. I beg to differ
It's working EXACTLY as it's supposed to - corrupt, partisan, and above the law.

7. I can just see commander bunnypants guy accusing the Democrats of playing politics
and of being partisan. What do you call it when you destroy justice so a couple of party hacks can make one party rule permanent?
