Bush Prevails in Political Showdown Over Iraq
Source: Voice of America

President Bush prevailed in his first showdown with the Democratic-controlled Congress over funding for the Iraq war. But as VOA National correspondent Jim Malone reports, Democrats and a large number of congressional Republicans believe the pressure to change course in Iraq will only grow in the months ahead.

Mr. Bush flexed enough political strength to win passage of a funding bill for the war without the troop withdrawal deadlines that Democrats had insisted on for months.

While the president may see the congressional funding vote as vindication of his strategy in Iraq, Democrats clearly have a different idea, even though they acknowledge they suffered a setback in their efforts to force a change in course on Iraq.

The domestic debate over the war is expected to reach another milestone in September when U.S. military officials give their assessment of progress in Iraq.

Pelosi on radio: "This is the beginning of the end for George Bush"

Really? Define END, then.

2. Sadly
On several forums I've posted that the Democrats should hold the line with the terms on the money. Thus having President Bush face the prospect of continuing to turn down the money. This, in my view, would have put the onus on Bush, not the Democratic Party.

It appears that many of our Democratic members of Congress viewed things differently. I'm not there and I don't walk in their shoes.

Bottom line is I hate listening to the repubs crowing about winning without having the majority.

9. You're exactly right
This morning Bill Press gave the Dems all the shit they deserve. THE DEMS have the majority. Press pointed out that if they would have voted together the bill would have been defeated and the Repubs would then have to go to the Dems and ask what they wanted in order to get a bill passed. But the STUPID FUCKING COWARDS gave Bush everything he wanted. EVERYTHING!! I was embarrassed by the comments afterward by Dems like Reid about how it was a message to Bush. Fuck you, Senator. Here's my message. I am using this forum to announce that permission is hereby given to President George W. Bush that he is allowed to start smirking again. Why shouldn't he? Maybe if he starts smirking the Dems will get the message. But I doubt it. What a disgusting display.

3. Its quite amazing when you think about it...
He allows us to be attacked on 9/11 (by his business pals, no less);
He lies us into this war;
He exposes an American intel operation to the enemy;
He establishes torture as an American strategy;
He uses the Justice Department for election fraud;
And although his party is in the minority, he gets $billions$ of our money with no strings attached...

Quite amazing...

8. I think it's a bit premature to say "Bush prevails.."
Basically, this was about supporting the troops. Now, we all know that if this was shot down, me and the rest of
my fellow sailors, airmen, marines, and soldiers would not stop getting paid, nor would meals stop being served
in Iraq. I think the message that was sent was, "Ok, look. We'll give you this now, but in September, when we
go through this again, it's over for you." And I'm fine with that. Although, I will admit that we're making
this lame-duck president look much more powerful than he really should be.

11. Maybe Bush's secret weapon is Lieberman
I can't think of anything that could scare all the Dems as much as his switching parties and tipping the Senate towards the GOP. In return, the Dems could prevent anything from getting out of the House, but if what we've seen is a sample of how they unite, they'll be right back where they started before last November.
