Mironov Tells Kyoto Experts The World Is Getting Cooler
Source: Moscow Time

ST. PETERSBURG -- It was a failure from the start. Russia's biggest conference on the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to fight global warming, began with a speech from a top official who denied that global warming even exists.

"In reality, the scientific basis for the protocol is fairly weak," Federation Council Speaker Sergei Mironov told a crowded opening session of the two-day conference Thursday, which drew more than 200 environmental experts and carbon market participants from around the world. "In the opinion of many experts, the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere does not have any effect on the climate."

On this point, Mironov stands on the fringes of global scientific opinion. A growing consensus has formed among top scientists and politicians, who have been warning governments to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being spewed into the atmosphere. The Kyoto Protocol, first signed in 1997, created a system of financial incentives for doing this.

Although Russia ratified Kyoto in 2004, the government now looks to be reneging on its commitments. Mironov's speech made that clear.

1. The world is getting cooler. Well, that's good news for all the places losing their
mountain ice, the North pole, Greenland, and the Antarctic, because they've all been melting like crazy lately. I'm sure glad those Russians have it ALL figured out.

2. But haven't glaciers and
Greenland been melting for centuries? I'm no expert, in fact I'm quite dumb on GW, but I thought I just saw something on Nature Channel last week that said that the glaciers have been melting since the holocene era????

8. That's because the earth is getting cooler
Yes but the rapid increase in the degree of the melting is getting very alarming. For example a major glacier in Alaska The Mendenhall Glacier has been retreating for a hundred years. The last ninty years it has retreated at an average of twenty feet a year. In 2005 it retreated over three hundred and fifty feet. 2006 was not quite so dramatic but still over two hundred feet. That is because the earth is getting cooler right???

4. He never leaves the lab
His little earth cools in the summer and heats in the winter.
There's a steady breeze through those little screens on the floor.

6. he should look at the actual content of those Dutch paintings
Several historial climatologists I know were discussing this a while back. Even the guy who's the one global warming skeptic in the group had to admit that they showed more serious winters (snowfall, frozen canals, etc.) for that part of the world than are experienced now. (The paintings date from during the Little Ice Age.)

7. I guess when Bush looked in to Putin's eyes,
he really did see his soul and they were kindred spirits.
